    NO ..
for a very good reason ..

There's NO EXCUSE for abuse ..
NO EXCUSE for stalking either (NOR Threats on one's life or family .. )

Some are truly that HEINOUS ..
the protections of Blocking are there for that purpose ..

No, sometimes it's necessary with stalkers and extreme trolls. But it shouldn't be done irresponsibly and I think the comment from Liam Murray has a good idea, that you should not be able to block someone you haven't commented to.

There should also be a way to have mods remove trolls that abuse blocking.

Although restrictions would be a GODSEND. Here's what I propose:

    - No blocking people you've never even talked to - you have to reply to one of their comments/replies 3+ times and wait a full day after your most recent reply

    - No blocking rampages! Block 5 people in less than 12 hours in a row, and you're suspended systematically for 5 days. At the end of those 5 days you get your account back, but can't block for 30 more days, and the people you blocked during your rampage are unblocked. Three strikes, and SH simply kicks you out, no Ifs, Ands, or Buts.

If a person is a jerk, he or she should be blocked. There is nowhere that says anyone has to put up with abuse

No, people need to be blocked when all they want to do is name call or start a fight.

Maybe you should be a little nicer and you wouldn't get blocked, just saying.

I don't think they should get ride of blocking but I do think they should make it harder to block than it is as sometimes people may be so rude that they deserve to be blocked but on the other hand some people may block simply because someone disagrees or because they can't win a debate. I think they should make it so that in order to block someone you must show the comment that you want to block the person for or send in some explanation for why you are blocking and then it should be reviewed and if the comment is very rude the block request should be approved by SH but if not the block request should be denied.

DON'T CARE would be my choice.

I'm an atheist, too, and when I'm blocked I just snicker, giggle or guffaw...depending on how hard I had zinged the blocker.

There are plenty of good questions where I'm not blocked and if I work my way through all the fundies, what does that say about their ability to defend their god?

He's gonna get them for that.

Yes. There is a perfectly reasonable reporting system for people who are being genuinely offensive or disruptive, which works well. Blocking is just a way for people to avoid hearing opinions they disagree with... which, on an opinion site ("Sodahead: Opinions... Everybody's Got One") is ridiculous.
  • hermit57 Icarus 2012/11/19 18:05:09

Wrong! I don't mind reading intelligent disagreements. I don't even mind a few curse words thrown in for emphasis! What I do mind are those who choose to be hateful, foul mouthed idiots about it. Or maybe just being foul mouthed with no particular comment about the topic at all, on every single opinion that I post, regardless of what it is. THOSE are the ones I block. And report. I'm glad I am able to block them.
  • Icarus hermit57 2012/11/19 18:12:27

Well, that's what the reporting function is for, and it works perfectly well. Blocking is too easily abused, and is not appropriate on a discussion forum.

I personally don't do it. But, I do understand why some people do. I consider it a nuclear option for those to use when they clearly feel that they're being harassed and have asked the person to stop.

Personally I don't Block. But "Blockification" (< Love it!) serves a viable purpose here. If you believe in freedom then part of it's true meaning is the right to not have to deal with someone.

It is unfortunate if you piss off the people that ask the most interesting questions. Might be time for a little self evaluation. Or not.

Liability issues, especially with the presence of minors on this site.

Life will still go on; and there are plenty of other people to argue with here....

It amazes me how something so unimportant seems to bother some folks so much.

I get blocked all the time, sometimes by people I've never even spoken to.

    No big deal.

No I haven't used it but once. I have been blocked by the same person twice. Second time it was done I blocked back....the reason this person did it was stupid...both times..so second time I figured what the heck..there is no pleasing this person unless you are willing to kiss some booty which I am not..so that's that.

But I can see the need for it...So yes it should be kept!

Considering those with the 3M syndrome (minute, miniscule, mentality) we not only need a block button but a switch to delete them from the internet.

If people don't want to deal with you why should they be forced to? Seems like your problem, not theirs.

Everyone I have ever blocked has either cursed at me, belittled my opinion with nasty words, raved the people who are bullies and are nasty themselves, or just won't shut up, after I've asked them to not comment to me anymore. I give my opinion, I don't mind at all reading others differences, but when one continues with insulting words, and can't shut the Hell up, it's time to move on.

I do understand that some block, just so they can hear only themselves, and/or have others to just agree with them, that is their prerogative, even if I don't agree with it.
    (edit)
I'm not anyone's verbal punching bag here, and I don't have to tolerate it...Do you understand why I choose to keep the block feature now.

    Bacci is right.

If people choose not to read the words of someone they find offensive, they should be able to do that. Just because I'm the Empress of Snark and find it amusing to ignore the spewers of ignorance or hatred, doesn't mean I would deny anyone else the right to feel differently. Blocking hurts nothing but a person's feelings...if it even does that. It doesn't whomp you over the head with a sandbag.

    I just move on.
