If the question was, "should schools do random drug screens of the student body, including athletes?" my answer would be yes.

If you want to find the bulk of the drug users look in the marching band. I can say that, because my son has been there done that, and still gets the random drug test from yours truly.

I actually don't see a problem with it. Make the parents sign permission slips. And if parents disagree, then their kid doesn't play.

Sounds like another employee of the school system who's benefits my town will be paying for life. No thanks.

They shouldn't just stop at athletes....all students should be randomly tested....just like in the real world when you get a job.

As we have seen from the ephedrine issues of the past, a simple drug screen could have prevented many unnecessary deaths.

There should be mandatory RANDOM testing of ONLY participants of activities that have the greatest potential of harming others. Such as, commercial drivers, pilots, air traffic controllers, train engineers, and so forth.

I say randomly drug test everyone in schools, it is a great way to catch a drug problem which could get much worse later in life while it is in its early stages and could save a lot of lives.

There, I fixed that for you.

Not nearly so much as a drug problem left unchecked and untreated which could then go on and kill them later in life.

In what sense? Have you ever seen a crack addict so addicted that nothing else matters in his life? Are you aware of how much of our societies crime is caused by junkies doing anything to get their fix? If we can help these people early, get them into some form of treatment and actually deal with some of the issues that lead people into drugs, while there is still time, then we must do so. However in order to do this we need to know who those people are that are taking these drugs.

Dont really care about the athletes, they make their choices and live their lives...consequences and all.

I would support mandatory drug testing of the teachers though

Waste of time & money. The failure rate in those states that have tried it show that it isn't valuable. The money should go toward education, not sport cheating.

No , In America we have a presumption of innocence. Along with a presumption of honor, dignity , and equality . We do not search first to find a crime.

    I think that's foolish.
Unless an athlete shows reason to suspect drug use, I don't believe so.

What's the problem if they're not doing it? It only takes a short moment out of their day to pee in a cup.

It's quite expensive for the number of athletes that they catch using drugs. The cost / benefits ratio suggests that it's a waste of time and money.
