Should News Organizations Have to Tell the Truth?

This story is about a year old, but I would like to hear what Sodaheads say about it.
Basically some reporters hired by a local Fox affiliate in Florida came up with a story that the network didn't want to have to defend, so they asked them to change their conclusions and fudge the truth....okay, lie. When the reporters refused to do it, they were fired.
They requested an received protection as whistle blowers but News Corp and Fox News appealed and it was decided by the Florida Court of Appeals that this protection was not warranted, because it was not against the law for a 'news organization' to knowingly mislead the public...okay, lie.
The question is, should organizations who report the news have to tell the truth or is it okay to knowingly lie to the public.

If Fox is so good, why would they have to sue to have the right to lie?
