Should kids be allowed to choose their own clothes no matter how crazy?

The kids free reign (for clothes) for the most part, but Mom and Dad hold veto privilege that comes from knowing the difference from expressing one self and looking like an idiot in public (especially now that everyone can photograph you and post it for posterity).

As long as they're clean and cover the appropriate body parts, I say let them express themselves. They'll be adults that have to conform to society before you know it.

Why not? Clothes are just something to cover up with. I wore kind of strange collections of clothing, it was no big thing.

some days i do, some i let them think they're picking (i lay out 2 outfits each and they pick one, keeps them happy and thinking they're in control).

but it wouldn't be the first time i've taken snow white, tinkerbell and princess aurora to the supermarket when they've had their own choice!

Well..to clarify..It dpends..By the age of the kid, what he or she wants to wear & how much
the outfit costs..If theyre of school age kindergarten on up, just rmind-tell them that 'You'll
B goin to school in this, you know..How do U think your classmates will react? Will they laugh @ U or look at U weird ? If U can deal with them great, if not..Then, I wouldnt get this outfit'..Thats how I would make them think about what they want to wear in public..On some clothing items, U will just have to tell them no..because the item violates the school dress code..The 'dress' is too low cut-too sexy..The T-Shirt has inappropriate words or designs on it, etc..

But to en extent. If its just wearing a cape and batman PJ's why not. But if its showing things like underwear or to much leg then its a no good. I want my kids to grow up without worrying about what other people think of them based on how they dress. Its better to just be yourself.

Let them dress themselves, it will help them learn what they like to wear that is socially acceptable, and there really are bigger more important issues in a kiss life.

    As the PARENT ..
since I earn the income ..
    provide for their needs ..
it is up to me to see that they are respectfully attired ..
and not going out the door in some totally inappropriate way ..
(start early .. be consistent .. and be a good example to your children too)

Define "crazy" if they arent revealing, drug and alcohol related, sexist, racist or obscene then yes. That doesn't leave much wiggle room for "crazy" but if it doesn't fit one of these catagories then I'm sure its fine.

I believe in giving kids freedom in every area that can't cause any lasting damage, and that includes cloths and hair. They have so little control over their lives in other ways, so at least let them control their appearance.

They can choose whatever they like at home, but in public and at school they need to dress appropriately.

In the end teens are going to do it anyways. If a teen looks like an idiot for wearing what they wear and they get picked on, so be it, let them fight their own battles. Being nice to each other all the time will get teens no where, you have to get nasty sometimes, and being picked on for your clothing choice is giving you the opportunity to prove you are able to stand up for yourself; not have someone else decide your pathway for you.

It is all good with me. I believe in expression and allowing them to have fun. I believe in allowing them to develop a mind of their own. I will only support it.

My opinions are kind of mixed here. I think that kids should be able to choose what they wear as long as the outfit is appropriate for where they're going to be and isn't too revealing; these factors also depend on the child's age.

    The argument for school uniforms.
Wearing the inappropriate is always a problem with decorum where they are often going.
Wearing the sexually provocative invites trouble, especially for girls.

This is actually a yes and no question..........as a general statement, then I'd say yes, but I would not have been pleased about allowing my pre-teen or teenage daughter to dress like a street walker (I'm being really nice here)..........while I realize she could change clothes as soon as she walked out the door, nevertheless, I wouldn't encourage it by buying the clothes for her.

For the most part. Parents should have final veto, and shouldn't have to buy the stuff if they don't like it, but mostly it should be what the kid wants. I'm lucky, my mom really doesn't care what I wear so log as no laws are broken or lower undergarments visible. Also, not thongs or writing on the butt. That's about all the rules I've heard her state on the matter.
