Should it be illegal for parents to give their kids embarassing names?

Christopher Kirchen 2012/06/24 20:30:26
Kids have to live with a name usually for the rest of their lives, and names from ones that have gone out of usage decades ago, such as perhaps Sheldon, to ones that are purely made up, such as Kal-el(Nicholas Cage actually saddled his kid with that one) are a mean trick for parents to play on their kids.

Hmm, difficult one. I think there should be parameters, set through referenda, so for example calling your baby Alpha-Baby would not be allowed.

A lot of gray area there. Though, I'm sure a lot of lawyers are salivating over that idea.

Well, one way to start is to think; if it weren't a "family name" would you want it? Also, to remember that your kids are not an outlet for your creativity; they will have to LIVE with this name, probably forever.

I wish it was sometimes. Naming a kid "Apple" sounds cruel to me...

whether or not something is embarrasing is entirely subjective.
To me the name Richard is potentially embarrasing as it's frequently shortened to dick.
    To others it's not.

In and of itself though, it's just Richard; if someone wants to be called Dick who has that name it's their prerogative.

Some Richards (and others) earn the title

Sure they do, but that's beside the point.

Fun
