Sculpture Made From 10,000 Flip Flops: Wonderful or Wasteful?

You may be asking yourself: what does one do with thousands upon thousands of rubber flip flops? The answer? Build an awesome sculpture of course! Well, that's what Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman did at least.

With the help of local artists and students, Hofman created a 45-foot-long sculpture of a monkey...covered completely in 10,000 colorful flip flops. Called "Macaco Gordo" (or "The Fat Monkey" in English), the humongous piece of art is currently chilling at a park in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The unique piece of art is definitely awesome, don't get us wrong. But we can't help but think that we could actually use a pair (or 10,000) of flip-flips...for our feet...to actually wear. Ours are getting pretty old. Do you think the flip-flop sculpture is wonderful -- or a little wasteful?

Very cool! If it were trashy looking, I would call it wasteful, but it is tastefully done, imaginative, and is a work of *art*! :-)

It's not really wasteful. Unless the person spent money buying new flip flops.
but for the most part. I's kinda dumb, unless you need a flotation device that looks odd.

It's a much better thing to have 10,000 flip-flops existing as a sculpture than rotting in a landfill.

Artistic talent, vision, and purpose are one of the few remaining differences which bind mankind together. Generations of young Americans have lost access through the Public (and private) Schools, and we need the inspiration of all the artists we can find. This is teriffic!

As an art lover, I bow down to this artist! I don't get why so many people would hate on it though. It's not the first time someone made something like this. People have been doing this kind of art for years! So why hate on it now? I think it's wonderful! Art should be expressive and shared to the world!

The shoes were already manufactured, & many mediums are not environmentally friendly. So I do hope they are later donated, but it is a terribly unique and fun sculpture...

Love it! What a creative idea. Kuddos to the artist. Can't think of a better use for flip flops. Flip flops are dangerous and should never be worn on the feet. Hence the name " flip flops". You can easily break an ankle wearing flimsy rubber things for shoes. Much safer to just go barefoot.

"Much safer to just go barefoot." I disagree! Bare feet are more sexy, but unless you are on the beach or in bed, you can step on sharp objects, dog excrement, etc.

Here in Brazil are sometimes made small tournaments and works of art. a share of income is often referred to charities. The football games, which most often placed more than 40,000 people in stadiums, also designed a portion of the proceeds to charity. I think it pretty much .. Do you agree?

Someone has to buy them. Wouldnt it have been more wasteful if all these flip-flops were just sitting in a warehouse or store somewhere not being bought?
