It is caused by the light refracting off tiny ice crystals very high up in the atmosphere... and it is very pretty.

CAUTION:

PLEASE DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN - IT CAN CAUSE MORE THAN TEMPORARY BLINDNESS.

You can also see the same halo around the moon on some nights...
