On the surface, it sounds really harsh, but we don't know the context of the conversation. I hope it wasn't an angry exchange. And, if you are confused as to why he said that, I'd sure be asking. Sometimes, we all say things "off the cuff" and without a lot of thought - and, unintentionally, hurt someone's feelings. I hope you'll be able to work through this.
