Purple Squirrel Found in Pennsylvania: Wonderful or Worrisome?

What would you do if you ever came across a purple squirrel? That may have been a hypothetical question a week ago, but now it's a whole different ball game. Because one couple in central Pennsylvania spotted a purple squirrel in their yard -- and they have pictures to prove it.
Percy and Connie Emert keep traps in their yard to keep squirrels away from their bird feeders and one day, the couple saw the colorful squirrel. "I thought, 'Nobody's going to believe me," Percy told the Christian Science Monitor.
Since then, a state game warden has come by to the Emert home and taken leftover samples of the squirrel's fir to test. And one curator at the Pittsburgh Zoo says he thinks it may be a gray squirrel with a tint of purple. "... it looked to me like this animal had come in contact with something with its fur and dyed its fur," Henry Kacprzyk said after looking at the picture of the squirrel on his phone.
Whatever the purple squirrel's story is, it's definitely a unique one. Do you think the fact that there's a purple squirrel out there is wonderful -- or worrisome?

+2I feel sorry for this squirrel being in this cage, look at the sad eyes. This is not the squirrel's true color, some idiot dyed the squirrel for publicity. This squirrel looks abused, should be set free. I would feed hundreds of squirrels in a large park full of trees. They were very friendly, even knew when my car arrived. They would come right up to me, though I never touched them. I would buy bags of hard shelled nuts for them. A few would come right up to me take one from my hand, eat the nut with its two little paws, so cute. They would take a few bury them all around the park. Squirrels have a strong scent. What is very unusual they only have one mate for life. In winter,they stayed in their tree nests, often surrounded by ice. reply - rw 2012/02/12 07:16:18Worrisome+1This purple squirrel looks really cute, but.......I can't help but wonder if it has some kind of illness or if this was somehow caused by worsening environmental factors? If someone painted it, this could be considered animal abuse if the chemicals from the paint is causing it to be sick. However, if it's purple due to some completely natural and extremely rare genetic mutation, then this is wonderful! Scientists should figure out what the mutation is and engineer more purple squirrels!reply

This poor squirrel looks very tormented, should be set free. I would feed nuts to hundreds of squirrels in a park. They would all run out when seeing me coming. It was funny. Squirrels have one mate for life. Too many humans have no respect for nature or wildlife.reply

And i do hate animal cruelty and i know its not colored naturally.....But they just dyed its fur its not gonna die. i remember i got a purple baby chick for Easter. It was so cute but then my dog ate it... R.I.P. But isnt going to die so dont worry bout it. I'm pretty sure it doesnt mind the color change. I'm not totally sure it doesnt mind because i cant talk squirrel...that would be cool if i could though. (:

- OzSurfer strawberry 2012/02/12 20:27:45+1Yes, I'm with you on that, I hate seeing native wildlife in cages. I get quite a few native animals come to my place such as kangaroos. Usually looking for food or water during the hot weather. I take care to give them some without making them reliant. My guess is that the squirrel probably isn't upset by the colour change directly, but it would be more about how other animals percieve it - it's own kind and predators. Don't know anything about squirrels so can't say, but anything that reduces it's survivability is cruel.reply
