Portrait Made Completely of Pushpins: Pin-tastic or Pin-sane?

YouTuber brusspup has really outdone himself this time. He's created a portrait. But it's no regular portrait with just some standard paint. It's not even a portrait made solely of coffee stains, made by fellow oddball artist Hong "Red" Yi. It's a portrait made completely of pushpins -- 15,000 of them to be exact.

Brusspup says he used Photoshop to break down a photo to just five basic color. He then picked five pushpin colors to represent those shades and got busy. Though he spent more than a month working on this project, slaving away for well over 100 hours, he was able to document all the work with a time-lapse video. So sit back and prepare to be amazed. This portrait process is unlike any other. Is it pin-tastic -- or just plain pin-sane? We'll let you decide.

I saw similar art at ArtPrize a few years ago. I thought it was amazing, especially when you walk towards it only to realize every little dot is made out of pins. Awesome!!

Yep brusspup does some amazing illusions. I don't know who's got more patience, him for doing it or Mrs brusspup for putting up with it :-)

It may seem odd to some people, but there are far worse things people can do with there time.

It is just a continuation of what George Seurat started over a century ago when he created this with little dots of paint. It is just that the medium has changed. That's all.
george seurat saturday in the park
The Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, 1884–1886, at The Art Institute of Chicago
I have seen this painting in person. it is huge in both impact and in size (207.6 cm × 308 cm (81.7 in × 121.25 in or in other words 6 ft. 9.7 in. × 10 ft. 1.25 in)). What blew me away was when I looked at the thing up close, every inch of it was little miniature dots of paint. so yeah, this thing with the push pins is a natural extension of Seurat's pointillism.

no its not. seurat didn't only do it with 5 colors.

Oh yes it is. Weather it be 5 or more colors or not, the theory and science behind these optical illusions is the same. It is the eye and the mind that blends these little dots of color together that forms the hues, the shades and the images in order to make sense of what it sees. It is directly tied to Seurat. Only the medium has changed from paint to pushpins. The same thing is with Pixels and Photomosaic (or Photographic mosaic*) too. Your eye and brain does all the work of blending them together.
Some photomosaics exploit the same theory as the artist with the push pins did.

    Photomosaic Photomosaic Photomosaic
*where the graphic image is made up of hundreds or thousand of tiny photos blending together to form a third image, color, shades and hues.

I'm sorry if I had insulted you, but there were many times I had found out that the person I was talking too didn't know what I was talking about. So therefore, I decided it was the safer route to explain what I was talking about so that the person I'm talking to and I are on the same footing. Unfortunately, unintentionally It makes me look like a know it all when I'm not. I'm always willing to learn and the first one to admit I'm wrong. But in this case, I'm not. All three methods use the same theory and science, just different mediums

Also what makes Seurat's work more amazing is that he did that without the aid of computers and modern technology. He had just used hand drawn sketches.
