'OMG' Dates Back to Almost 100 Years Ago: Real or Hoax?

OMG... you guys won't believe this! So, you know the abbreviation "OMG," short for the phrase "Oh My God"? Well, it was evidently used as early as 1917, in some correspondence from John Arbuthnot Fisher to Winston Churchill. Do you believe it? Or do you think this news is a little too good to be true?

Less grave, but nonetheless usually put on the youths of the world, is the popularization of text-speak. You know the type: LOL, LMFAO, ROFL, OMG, Totes. Well, it turns out there's at least one of those abominations to the English language that no one in any recent generation has to take the blame for: OMG is at almost a hundred years old.

    100 years ago, people rarely said the Lord's name in vain, (which OMG is a corrupted version of doing) so I seriously doubt OMG would be from back that far.

    I believe Lord Fisher would know better than to apply so many exclamation marks in writing his letter.

    Then again, those words were used commonly back in the days, so it was almost inevitable that someone found a way to make saying them together shorter.

    ..and here I was, content in the knowledge that 'OMG' showed up In letters between Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and maybe Patrick Henry and Paul Revere. I've no way to prove or disprove this, so must leave it in the plausible hearsay column, waiting for real scholars to reaffirm what is, and isn't real.

    Not really shocked. I don't if this is true or not but we have shortened stuff for years. Remember that it could be from the wire days. You did not have that many letters and it cost per letter. It might be about that is it is true. If I saw it on a card I can tell it the card is real or not.

    I sincerely doubt it. With today's technology, it's far too easy to insert OMG in an old letter. It's modern day vernacular, as in, we created the meaning in modern times! Maybe the abbreviation was around, but I don't think it meant what it means today. Besides, could you imagine stiff 20th century people, who used very formal English to be so casual?
