"Obama Complains that Michelle Doesn't Make Money As First Lady" Should the first lady get paid?

This tells a lot about Obama's despotic attitude regarding payment: He believes payment should be awarded from some vague pool of "everyone's" money on an arbitrarily subjective basis by some authority, rather than freely negotiated by the provider and recipient of some good or service.

Personally, I think the president makes too much.

Michelle Obama has more paid assistants than any First Lady in U.S. history. The total combined salaries of her 26 assistants is $1,750,000 per year paid for by tax payers. That does not include the cost of the lavish benefits package each one also receives.

When compared to past First Ladies, Michelle Obama is so far out of the norm it’s actually stunning.

Hillary Clinton = 3 assistants

Laura Bush = 1 assistant

Jackie Kennedy = 1 assistant

Michelle Obama = 26 assistants

It sounds like Michelle is doing a hell of a lot behind the scenes that we don’t know about to need that many assistants. Congress should look into this and find out what she’s up to.

What service is she offering. Who knows many might reconsider their thought process.

The First Lady is no longer a kept woman, as Mamie Eisenhower was. The best example of a proactive First Lady was Eleanor Roosevelt, who crusaded for human rights and for justice for children around the world. First Lady Eleanor was also a key figure in the establishment of the United Nations, which has mediated conflict between nations for more than 60 years. I don't know if a salary is appropriate, but certainly a BUDGET for the First Lady's public endeavors would be appropriate. Lyndon Johnson's wife, Lady Bird, crusaded for the Beautification of America, supporting planting of trees, shrubs, and flower beds in public spaces, and the removal of unsightly advertising (billboards) along highways, so that auto travelers might see more of the beauty of America.

You really think we should pay her. We did not elect her! We elected her husband. This thinking is nuts.

Mamie was no kept woman!

For what? She is given a staff at our expense, she travels and vacations at our expense and is about as useless as tits on a bull. She costs us millions a year for nothing already

Headhunter is evidently totally unaware of the First Lady's leadership in the program LetsMove, an outreach and educational program aimed at the epidemic of adolescent obesity that is killing an entire generation.

So what we did not hire her. If she wishes to do good then fine. No Tax money for her!

That's called volunteering. Many do it and don't get paid. Why should she. Besides that, she just offers her name, not real honest-to-goodness time.

Obviously you are unaware that this is figurehead volunteer position. And if it were a job then they should pay her not us as well as cover her travel expenses and her security. Bet that would end them quickly.

Although most first ladies get involved and do things it's not a "job" per se, it's just title and although I do a crap load more work since I became "mom" I don't think I should get a paycheck for it.
