Back when Detroit made real cars!! Too bad GM has made so many bad business decisions, including screwing all their little dealers out of their franchises. I'll never buy GM again.

When they finally invent a time machine, I'm going back to the 50s and staying there. :-)

I owned many of them. I have never owned a foreign car. I own a Chevy Impala and a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I use the Pontiac as my pic here.

sounds like fun. One of my 55 Pontiac already pretty hot I bored and stroked by Sr. & Sr., dual quads, 3/4 race cam, solid lifters, B&M hydro and headers. She would burn rubber thru the first 2 gears and chirp in 3. Oh I forgot the Mallery ignition. I use to blow the Hemi off the road. The transwent out in the middle of the desert and they towed it away and did not send me a notice until it was to late to piockup the car. When I called they never gave me any details as to where or if it had been towed. Someone must have wanted my car.

I loved that little light under the hood on the Star Chief and the heater being under th seat. Help warm that backside in the winter on those cooled leather seat covers. That was some heavy duty leather they had back then. Not this split junk they care leather now. I had to resow mine one time and my step-father just happened to have a palm pad to push the needle with that heavy .duty waxed thread.
That 455 in the GTO would really set you back in seat. I would love to have on of those now with the new electronic ignition control. In fact I would have love one on my old 55. I think that I could have broke those a 11's easily. What great times in my life. My super Charged Pontiac that I have can do a good job of setting you back as well but nothing like m,y friend 455 did.

Beautiful cars. The metalworking and styling was brilliant back then, but mechanically, modern cars are far superior. Something to make you sad:

The 1958 Impala with a top of the line "Turbo Fire" V8 displacing 5.7 Liters (348 CID) made 250 HP.

The 2008 Toyota Camry (a practical but very boring car) with a much smaller 3.5L V6 engine makes 268 HP, gets double the fuel economy, accelerates much faster from 0-60, and is safer in an accident (not starting a US vs Japan debate either, just picking a popular modern family car).

Many new 4 cylinder models from both US and Japanese automakers are hitting the 200 HP mark. As pretty as the old cars are, they had bad brakes (4 wheel drum), heavy steering, cornered like aircraft carriers, leaked, and made your garage smell like gasoline. Also, despite being heavier, they were not always better in a wreck. With no crush zones or shoulder harnesses, a lot of people got messed up badly in auto wrecks. They don't build them like they used to, and that's a good thing.

    Still, I'd love a 69 Camaro...

interestingly enough did you know that the technology behind the newer cars was available in 1958? the long ram manifolds of the 58 chryslers are used today in toyotas and other 4 cylinders to get low end torque - the fuel injected 58 corvette got 22 mpg IN 58 the wrap around crank skirts of the newer cars for low end crank strength was found in the 58 ford 352 - the hemisphyrical combustion chambers used on virtually all of the speedy 4 cylinders today was developed in 49 by chrysler and used in all their 50's models including the 58's - even disc brakes were developed and used on some of the cars back then - I can buld an engine for you that gets good gas mileage is faster than a speeding bullet stops on a dime and turns even quicker and only use 1958 technology

a fuel injected 69 camaro with disc brakes and factory roll cage will still put many cars to shame even today.

Comparing Chevys to cars in the 50's was no comparison, comparing GM cars to most cars today is a joke.
