Don't see anything nerdy about it. Leaving money on the table has always been the traditional way to tip. Other than putting on a credit card or handing it directly to the server, what else could you do?

I've waited tables before, and trust me, the server doesn't care. As long as the tip is good, they don't care about the way it's left.

I agree, I think it is a stupid way to leave a tip...the restaurant probably couldn't have even figured it out, if he had not totaled the receipt...

It's like people who think it is cute to pay with $2 bills, or a bunch of quarters, or some other concoction of money....

I've never been a waitress or waiter, but I would say that servers do not care about little idiosyncrasies of the diners.
'But the larger the tip the better' as far as they are concerned.
