Yeah, I'm a good speller. Bad thing is I can't stand misspelled words and want to fix them, even when it's none of my business. I keep my mouth shut unless it's a close relative or friend.

yes, I'm very meticulous about my spelling.

I am great at spelling but I have this one bad habit, I can't spell the word right most of the time I have Dyslexia and I can't spell. I get it partially right but I'll switch letters around, don't mean to But I do!

I like to see myself as quite an advanced writer and speller for my young age. I wish the modern world could be taught how to use proper grammer. How to speak shouldn't have to be taught to 8-13+ year old children and even adults! I feel as though I am constantly correcting people for using words that dont even exist such as "amn't" and if you can believe it "haded". What is wrong with the world? Or is it just that I am a snobby perfectionist?

.... you'll find our schooling to be much ' less ' than you are accustomed to, and would likely label our Public Schools as a sham, for the most part.

I'm finding that private- and home-schooled students aren't a whole lot better.

No, you're right to insist that others use correct language. It's becoming so bad that the level of discourse in congress is now designated as utilizing 8th grade language.How sad that Americans now say that the Constitution is too hard to read! It's really very simple if you read well. The public schools have dumbed down our schools so terribly!

It is ignorance and the failure of the public schools. I don't even think they concentrate on spelling and grammer like the did when I was in school! I had it drilled into me for several years.

.... we experienced the same ' Drill ' in Catholic School. It wasn't all that bad in retrospect.

In fifth grade, I am certain that we conjugated every verb in the English language! We had to keep a notebook and were assigned several every night for homework. It certainly paid off! Every employer I have ever worked for has commended me for having excellent communication skills.

As in your situation, I have been the benefactor of the strict ed and the ' Nuns ' that I often gripe about .... sent my children to Catholic School, tells you a little, 'eh < s >

The modern day "educators" want to change how everything is done, but the old tried and true methods did and still work very effectively! Why can't Johnny read? Because the teacher is too soft and doesn't want to harm his self esteem!

For the most part, I try to use correct spelling and proper English. However, I have seen some of the worst writing from very educated people such as engineers, managers, and other professionals. Over the years, the art of writing has taken a hard hit to the point the average person writes on a third grade level.

You can add to the list of offenses such as far too many writers can't tell the difference between the following words and their usage:

to, too, two
there, their, they're
your, you're
I, me

It drives me nuts to hear, "Oh, I like that better." No, you like that MORE -or- You like that the MOST.

To oddballs like me, when we see such poorly worded writing and word usage, we instantly equate how intelligent or educated the writer is. I don't know if the smearing of grammar and spelling is a result of lower standards in school, laziness or it's simply not taught any more.

..... Catholic School or Private ?

I went to public school. Many years ago I had a teacher tell our class people don't care how they write any more. She said it does matter although at the time I didn't fully understand why. I decided in the second grade I was not going to be that type of person. I often hear, "Gee, you have beautiful handwriting for a guy." I have also had comments to some of the letters to the editor in our local newspaper such as, "I love the way you write. I makes it as if you're talking to me." Although it may sound rather odd, I learned more English in German class than I did in English class.

Jeff is coming across as an arrogant fool. It is obvious what she is getting at. Everyone is allowed a typo or spelling mistake once in a while.
