They're as different as night and day, so odd comparison, but I was never that big of a southern rock fan. I like it, but I don't own much of it, and I got enough as a DJ, and at parties and events. My thing was Rock and progressive Rock, and the Zep, has always been one the bands right up there at the top of the heap.
Well, to my ear anyway. I suppose they both have an American blues based root, but Led Zeppelin, being made of British musicians who were into things like their contemporaries Pink Floyd, Yes, The Who. The experimentation of British art rock. They infused their music with this as well. They experimented with time signatures and melody twists that would go where the mind didn't expect them to go. There's a lot of intricacy and subtle subtext in the most bombastic and deceivingly simply rock songs they would lay down. Lynard Skynnard, (unless I missed a bunch of their music , which I admit is possible), seems to me to a very straight forward, no frills Southern Rock band with a heavy Delta blues subtext. Great musicians, but I don't see or hear the level of creativity, or the depth of melodic structure present in most Led Zeppelin Music. I would say something like, which do you like better, Led Zeppelin or The Who (for instance) or Lynnard Skynnard or Molly Hatchet. I would view those as comparisons in the same genres. Just my 2 cents. Fine musicians all. But yes, night and day to me.
It was a big show. Brownsville Station opened and werent very good, then Peter Frampton came on and did real well, then Lynyrd Skynyrd...and then? BLACK SABBATH! As I recall this was in 1975 or 76 at the Orange Show Stadium (pretty small) in San Bernardino, Ca.
