I've always been turned off by that--it looks to me like they're trying to hard to overcompensate for something

I've got no time for "bad" boys or jerks and never saw the appeal. At the same time I don't want a guy who is too nice(as in door mat nice). I'm not a perfectly nice person and I want someone who will shove back if I start walking all over them, and who has the capacity to be a bit mean if that is what the situation calls for.
Basically I want an overall nice guy who has a bit of a bad streak.

Most nice guys know how to stand your ground. I'm a nice guy, but I'm not a doormat. You see my ex thought she could mistake my kindness for weakness too and learned the hard way after I dumped her to the curb. There's a difference between being nice and being spineless. The bad streak is nothing more than insecurity and overcompensation. The sooner you learn that lesson in life, the better off you'll be.

I know a woman who used to be into bad boys but has married someone who, as far as I can tell, isn't one. I don't know the appeal of bad boys because the ones I have met really are BAD people. If I was a woman I wouldn't be into that.

Most bad asses are jerks. All they're doing is beating their chests like gorillas because they're insecure. Maybe you should start looking in other places for quality guys instead of dive bars.

well the thrill and excitement yes, but no abuse... i would never put up with abuse! But i dont know why... bad boys just look even sexier!:D haha at least i think so! alos they are mostly tatted up... and:
