Labrador Retriever Named America's Most Popular Dog: Do You Prefer Large or Small Dogs?

The American Kennel Club has released its annual top 10 dog breeds list and the Labrador Retriever has been named America's Most Popular Dog. The list was revealed on NBC's "Today Show" last Wednesday. The Labrador Retriever's ranking is even more impressive when you realize it's the 22nd year the large dog breed has been named number one.

Another large dog breed took a top spot, as the German Shepherd was listed at number two. A spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club stated that despite the larger dog breeds' dominance on the list, smaller dogs like the Poodle, Dachshund, and Beagle also took spots in the top 10.

The top 10 list in order from top to bottom is as follows: Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Bulldogs, Yorkshire Terriers, Boxers, Poodles, Rottweilers, and Dachshunds. Of course, this list doesn't completely represent the U.S. and people's individual preferences of what dogs they own or would like have, but it is a good indicator.

Large dogs have more qualities that I like in a dog than small dogs do.

I voted large dogs, but I could easily say almost every breed there is lol... let's say I prefer bigger breeds, though I do find a lot of small ones cute as well :)
My "dream combination" would be a Rottweiler and a black Pug :D

I have 4 dogs three chihuahuas and one pit bull mix. The chihuahuas are evil little things trying to bite people my pit bull mix tries to lick their faces off. Which would you prefer?

Large Dogs

I used to work with Labs when I was a kid and the Guys from Wisconsin and Minnesota would go down to Texas and train their dogs in the Lakes and the Rice Fields there. They had the little trailers for carrying the dogs and it was fun and exciting. I really felt close to some of those Black Labs. It was indeed quite an experience. As I look back on it, I would have taken the job for No-Pay . . . I was working during the Christmas Break from school, as a young teenager.

Philippine street dog. Small (15 to 20 pounds), usually yellow, maybe with white markings. Needs little care, will eat anything (rice with dried fish is usual). Good ratter and watch dog. Tends to be timid and shy.

Large Dogs

Small dogs are cute, but what good are they when someone breaks in the house and attacks you? They'll probably run and leave you to keep from getting stepped on. Plus, big dogs are fun to cuddle with.

It always seems like the biggest dogs are the most lovable ones and the sweetest ones. While the small dogs are yappy and mean.

Small dogs are yappy and mean only because owners don't treat them as dogs and more like toys.

I've a small and a big dog at home, we don't treat them differently and the smaller one is very well behaved for it.

The general rule is, ignore size. If it's something you won't let the big dog do, don't let the small one do it either.

It is not a matter of size , it is a matter of dog . I would like a Golden Retriever , it is big .
My next choice would be a small ,fast hunting dog , it is small . And you don't have any other option , again ..

I prefer medium sized dogs, like cocker or springer spaniels. Right now we have a small dog. Here is a pic of her sleeping in my duffle bag.

Should have been a third choice-----all dogs. We have three that weigh 3lbs each and one that weighs in at 125lbs. Several others in a range of 10lbs to 40lbs. They're all sweethearts. The 125 lb. red doberman is our guard dog and she's not mean but protective and will give me enough time to show up with my S&W; .44.

It is almost never the animal's fault. They just follow what humans tell them, etc. I know this from horses. It is never the horses fault, they do what the rider tells them unless something frightens them and then that is their nature. The stupidest animal on earth is human..... Just look at our government. LOL

I know what you mean, i had horses at one time and before that learned to ride and took a terrible fall. But it was not the horses fault it was mine. Then i trained canines for years and trained for the disabled. Never the animals fault and you are correct we are the stupidest animal on earth. Just look at what is in Washington. It is a mess.
