Despite his different roles, I can only see John Wayne as the stereotypical American cowboy...from the first cowboy role as a young man to Rooster Cogburn or the Shootist....
Not sure if Clint was a "better" cowboy, but it is HIS westerns that I liked most and remember. Something about that man........okay, I have the hots for him.
I did like John Wayne, and his last movie as a cowboy, The Shootist, was very poignant.
He surely does. I can't recall a movie, personal appearance, or written interview where he hasn't maintained that coolness. Paul Newman was like that, and Robert Redford is too. I digress.......
Can't make this comparison. They were from different movie eras and styles. John Wayne played the "romanticized" Hollywood version of the Wild West and Cowboys.
Clint Eastwood was as the forefront of the "spaghetti-western".
Two different genres....John Wayne was the classic old time cowboy, Clint was a product of the spaghetti westerns, more dirt and gritty reality. Can't really compare them, both were exceptional in their own format.
Yes but if memory servers. John Wayne never EVER rode a horse. He was very afraid of them. They had to use stunt doubles. That was not made public until he stopped acting. Kin fact it was in everyone's contract that they never mention it.
P.S. I couldn't choose one over the other, so I'm posting here.

I should shut up now. But it was tongue in cheek.
