Jennifer Lawrence must have a thing for squirrels ... and no, we're not talking about "The Hunger Games." The actress recently admitted to Rolling Stone that she skinned a live squirrel as part of her Oscar-nominated role in "Winter's Bone." Jennifer Lawrence said, "I should say it wasn't real, for PETA. But screw PETA." Whoa. Them be some fighting words.

jennifer lawrence

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has now responded to her remarks, with President Ingrid Newkirk telling Gothamist: "She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, 'The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest.'

"When people kill animals, it is the animals who are 'screwed', not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature." So ... whose side are you on? PETA's? Or do you think J-Law was just getting into character when she skinned a squirrel?

I think you need to go back and do a re-write, because as written, it would seem that she was skinning it while it was still alive. Poor word usage. Obviously, it had been a live squirrel, but she skinned it after it was dead-----no big deal.
And HELL YEAH!!! I'd flip off PETA too. I like this girl already.

My thoughts exactly. You don't skin live squirrels lol. I just decided that I will watch hunger games now though. I'll support just about any actor/actress who doesn't like PETA.

True, live squirrels can be dangerous if you're trying to harm them manually. Rodent claws and teeth are nasty. PETA are domestic terrorists.

And if they did the same thing to a dead human would you still think it's "rad"? What she did promotes animal abuse which leads to abusing HUMANS.

The astonishing lack of reading comprehension displayed by far too many dumbos here is a sad testimony about our lousy education system. I am reading comment after comment by people who can't seem to understand that the squirrel was dead. And I'm getting personally attacked by some of these nitwits because they can't see past their wild-eyed, mouth-frothing, rage. Apparently, some folks watch too many cartoons and can't differentiate between human characteristics and wild animal characteristics.

Hey man, anyone willing to stick their nuts in their mouth, sprint across on-coming traffic, race up a tree, and dive in a freakin' hole is no animal I want to mess with......
Ultimately, does this not highlight the awesomeness of this girl for actually shooting one with a bow, and skinning it?

The point isn't that it was "just one squirrel," the point was that the thing was APPARENTLY STILL ALIVE while this was being done. That is cruelty, pure and simple.

i understand that and i also think its a little cruel and dont think i could skin a live animal or even go hunting but i just think that its pretty interesting that she did that just for the movie and i think there are many other animals we need to worry about more like whales or tigers or other animals that might not be on this planet in a very long time and should focus our attention to things like how the japanese kill hundreds of dolphins every day but instead we focus on an actress who killed a squirrel and im sorry if i offended u i truly am

I just saw "the Cove" Documentary. I cried like a baby. Dolphins = VERY important.

I agree with the squirrel thing. They shot in Missouri and bought the squirrels already dead from a local hunter. In those woods there are millions in just one small area. They are far from endangered.

not she shot it with a bow and arrow. The bow and arrow wasn't just a prop in the hunger games. I read somewhere that she really knows how to use it, and that she could qualify for the Olympics.

I'd wear my dog, if I was cold and naked and he was dead.

I'd also eat 'im too, if I was hungry and he had been killed. S'just meat and fur; we've been killing and eating animals since life began, practically. Can't get more natural than that.

Those situations are so unlikely I can't even describe it.
There is no excuse for plucking an animal out of it's home and skinning it ALIVE for NO reason.
And trying to say she was "getting into a roll" is BS. How many live animals did you see her skin in that movie?
  • Shelby C. Vitalani 2012/04/12 02:10:24
    Shelby C.
Well I love my dog, of course, but nothing seperates him from the animals I eat but love. So if he died, I'd just use him like any other dead animal. Almost more respectful than just burying him, as that'd be nature's way.

I've never seen the movie. I'm assuming here the animal was "a live" animal, not an "alive" animal. I'm sure people wouldn't ALLOW her to skin something still living on set.
  • Vitalani Shelby C. 2012/04/12 02:14:17 (edited)
    Vitalani
Nature's way is not humans "using" unnaturally domesticated animals.
And she may not have done it on set but she still did it.."skinned a live squirrel".
    What is the difference between:
    Skinning a live animal
    And
Skinning an alive animal??? There isn't one.

What other animals feel is totally irrelevant. And I do actually believe that animals are capable of what we have named "compassion". Our feelings are nothing more than chemical reactions and neurons, every animal has those. In the wild? This isn't the wild, I don't know where you're from. And just incase you were unaware YES yes you can eat nothing other than plants and not only survive but live longer as well. The whole vegetable thing is crazy, they do not have brains so I won't even address that. And no "eat or be eaten" is not how the human world works, sorry. Mankind has made damn sure of that. Also, I'm not starving in the wild. I live in a house with a fully stocked cupboard. I'm sorry if progression is to much for some people but I choose humane over inhumane. In the "real world" pigs aren't force bred and pumped full of hormones, sick cows aren't loaded onto conveyor belts by fork lifts for OUR consumption. Give me a break with all that "It's natural" BS. WE have made our world SO unnatural it's disgusting.

Why are you taking this all so seriously anyway?

EDIT: I had some misinformation, I failed to realize what movie this was from. But I gathered a small bit of info, she DID do it on set.

Even before people were around, it was the natural way of life for one thing to eat another. People are animals as well therefore it is also our natural way of life. As far as the plant thing, yes, they are alive! They grow, they eat (glucose and sunlight), some can even give off a toxin to help defend themselves from things that want to eat them. Thats also why some plants have thorns (catus) to protect themselves from natural enemies. Venus fly traps can move and eat bugs, the only thing different about eating plants is that they make no scared little noises, they cant try to run away, they're completely defenseless to you vegetarians.
