Is This Coffee-Stain Art Awesome?

Art comes in many different forms, but we never thought we'd come across this type. Artist Hong “Red” Yi decided to do the unthinkable and created a portrait solely from the ring stains of her coffee mug. We can only guess how long this coffee-stain masterpiece took her, but the portrait of actor Jay Chou is intricate and stands pretty high.

Plus, Yi is no stranger to completing her art with unconventional tools. She's also painted a portrait of basketball player Yao Ming with red paint and a basketball. And if you're interested in how the artist executed her new coffee-strain portrait, just watch the video of Yi's unique artistic method below...and let us know if you think it's just as awesome as we do.

It's amazing! It's always great to see art that is creative and thoughtful, rather than offensive or shocking.

But, I'm not so much impressed that it's done with a coffee stain or a cup rim (tools). I like the portrait itself. The eye 'pops' more cleanly than the rest, and it holds my attention. Very nice.

I did that one myself ...it's a coffee-by-numbers paint kit (amazon.com). I used Stella in place of coffee. Well, I started using Stella. It (ehm) evaporated before I completed the piece. I don't know why or how that happened.

    Edit:
The unfinished piece was brilliant, but it's really hard to prove that. It only had one Stella rim/ring.

Unfinished brilliance! I believe that Stella could produce that.

Yes, the problem with Stella is she tends to encourage unfinishism. But I'm a humanist (and a beerist); I can be very tolerant of such things.

This made me smile. A friend and I recently raided my pantry for some interesting experiments with washes and dyes. Teas, curries, mustards and soy sauce also work quite nicely. :)

Personally, it doesn't matter what the medium... the art is awesome, creative... and unique... She took something she drinks every day and used it as an art medium...

I have done artwork with woman's makeup... think of the incredibly vibrant colours available... fingernail polish, lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner, eyeliner, eye shadow, rouge, etc...

Coffe has better uses, like keeping me on my feet. She should get the color copied with something other than essential vitamins.

You're from a location that produces the best tasting coffee in the world. Also some of the priciest. And you would let it be used for paint?

yup, cuz it's very easy to get here, we use less then on-forth of the coffee compare to you guys(we prefer cocoa), and Art is just too SEXY to think about that.
