why do you hope so? because you can't believe in yourself? if you're so scared, that you need a fantasy to believe in, you need to reexamine your life.

Man created gods to explain things that were beyond their ability to understand. Science, physics and cosmology have enabled us to gain an understand of the universe and our place in it that was previous not achievable. There are logical, natural explanations to the origins of the universe, so we no longer need a god to explain creation.

Further we now know that space/time are really the same thing, so before the universe existed, there was no time, so the very concept of causality, or a creator before the universe is nonsensical.

I am an athiest therefore I don't believe in God. Please don't anyone have a go at me for this, it is what I believe and I answered a question asking me for my opinion and I've given it. I am not anti-religion, I may not agree with certain aspects of different religion but that does not mean that I despise religious people, if you believe in god, I'm cool with that. Therefore, if you don;t mind my opinion and your nice enough to me then \I respect you.

Many things. The obvious design we see as we learn more about the physics of the universe. The fact that the Big Bang points to a beginning - something/someone had to be the cause of that effect. Statistics - there is too low a probability of random activities resulting in the complicated systems and structures we see in life, even if we multiply our estimates of the age of the universe by 1000 and our estimate of the number of molecules in the universe by 1000. I could go on, but I also don't want to come across as rude - that's not my intent at all.

    Thanks for asking.

I don't think it's rude at all. Hell, I'm probably being more rude than you. Say what you think. My thing is this: I don't mind people saying they believe in God. But when they claim to be certain, they imply that there is no basis for doubt. This simply isn't the case. I can refute every one of those points, pretty easilly; not to prove that there is no god, but that there is no NEED for a god, to explain them. If you like, I'm happy to do so.

I am certain there is a God, but in no way do I mean to insinuate there is no basis for doubt. I fully accept that there is lots of room for doubt. I even have had doubts in my past, and am not so arrogant as to claim that I will never doubt it in my future. I'd love to have the discussion with you and hear your points of view. I have found that it is always beneficial to understand how those who think or believe differently come to their conclusions, even if you believe differently. So each post doesn't get overly drawn out, how about we go about it one topic at a time? Let's start with probabilities. What's your take on what I mentioned above regarding the statistics and improbability of the complicated systems and structures coming about by random chance?

I'm assuming that you're refering to what is known as the "irreducable complexity" argument, which suggests that systems like the human-eye, or photosynthisis, are too complex or intricate to have simply happened, without a guiding hand, creating them.
No one is suggesting that these systems simply appeared. Bear in mind that we (evolutionists) believe that the earth is millions of years old, and the universe itself is much older, if not eternal. We believe that these systems are the result of millions of years of evolution and adaptation through natural selection.
Even in the brief history of humanity, we have seen evolution take place. If you look at an ancient castle or ruin in Europe or Asia, you'll see doorways which are only 6 feet tall. Maybe less. People have grown taller on average by almost a foot, just in the last thousand years. There are many fish, which have no need to see, so they don't have eyes. Bats are nocturnal, so they are nearly blind, but they have 20/20 sonar vision. These didn't happen immediately. They were adapting to the world they had to live in. Humans did the same thing, so did plants. The early cells which eventually split, and mutated into sentient beings, which eventually evolved into us, were adapting to survive. The strong traits survived.

No, there isn't. That doesn't make life any less meaningful, though. In fact it's more meaningful. We are not servants; we are not sinners. We are just people.

I can see how you would think that, but I'm really not. The fact is that anyone could have written the Bible based on any story they've heard. The "feeling" you get when you pray could very well be psycho-somatic. I'm not saying that there is or isn't a god. I'm only saying that the Bible proves nothing.

Believe as you wish. I'm probably rare in the fact that I will not constantly try defending what I believe to someone who is clearly not going to believe even a ounce of what I believe. You have shown that no matter what I say you are going to shoot what I say down some how. Believe as you wish.

You don't seem to get it. I'm not trying to make you agree with me. And you're right in the fact that I'm not likely to change my mind either. Believe as you will. But when you present your BELIEFS as if they are irrefutable facts, it becomes dishonest.
  • Changeling elijahin24 2012/06/12 19:46:48

I was not presenting my beliefs as facts that I was willing to defend. You asked a question and I answered it. had I known I'd be attacked I'd have not answered.

Why is it that Christians see every question about their beliefs, as an attack? Do you see it as an attack every time someone asks you a question about your job? About your kids? Why are Christians so defensive?

Exactly right. If this is the only life we will ever have, it couldn't possibly be more precious and more meaningful.
