Is the music played today, better than the music from 70's and 80's?

I actually prefer the music from the 50's, 60's 70's and 80's much better than the music from today. There are exceptions such as Susan Boyle, but some of her best recordings are the old songs. I also like Taylor Swift, but please do not tell Kanye West. I do not want him showing up at my door lobbying for Beyonce! I have no use for "Rap" and "Heavy Metal."

It's a matter of taste. I think the question is too general because obviously the comparison is what people liked to listen to in the 70's and 80's and what they like to listen to now. In most cases, the music of the mind in it's youth will most likely be better than music as mind gets older. It's the "good old days" phenomenon.

I really like both. You didn't give us that choice! Today has some great songs too, but I know the words of the oldies. If I sing the new songs as much, I'll learn them too. I like Lady Antibellum.

I got fried out on what they now call 'classic rock' because I had the radio on all the time. Now, we have access to excellent new sounds from every corner of the planet. Much better.

Today's music all sounds like someone rhyming to the beat of a drum. A low form of music found in early Africa or the Underdog cartoon show.

The music of today seems to be Rap which is a pitiful excuse for music. Electronically generated music, loud screaming hard to understand lyrics from people that can't sing, and all too often a bad message. Rap is Crap.

If you put todays singers next to the oldies singers without help from computers, oldies would win without a doubt. Back then you heard what the singers really sounded like, these days you don't have to sound good as they can fix anything and make you sound good. There is some music of today I do like, but I still like more of the oldies even further back than the 1970"s.

The musical proficiency of some of the musicians today wouldn't get them a notice back in the 60's and 70's when you actually had to know how to play your own instrument. I kind of feel sorry for many of these bands today three very loud chords, a little computer magic both on stage live and the studio and bang you got yourself a hit song no actual craft knowledge required.

The best music in the best times to grow up went from the late 50's to the end of the 80's. The birth of the Rock era from the mid 60's on.

There is too much pop trash on the radio these days. I'm sure they played better things back in the seventies. Today's music is fine.... unless it's on the radio.

There is almost NO rock left in what would be considered today's music! It's all hip-hop and pop. What's to like, except what the older bands (including the alt rock bands of the 90s) are thankfully putting out?

Better than the stuff they call "popular" music today. But, there are some bands who release music now that are actually pretty good. And by that I mean no autotune, they actually sing live, they play their own instruments, etc. You just need to know where to look for them.

I think there's good music from each era, you just have to look in the right places. But I think most people like old music better because it gives them that feeling of nostalgia, it brings back good memories from their childhood. Sometimes I wonder if the songs were switched, would people still say that old songs were better? hhmmm.

I feel bad that today's kids missed the Beatles just as I missed Sinatra I suppose. It all depends on your age. I'll never forget my day yelling, "Turn that crap down!"

I have to laugh though when I think back to the first rap song I heard about 20 yrs ago. I swear the only three words I could make out were the n-word, bitch and ho' in that order. At that point I couldn't figure out why black groups were dissing their sisters so much not to mention help wondering why they left the letter "c" off the front of the word "rap"?
  • Aquaduck Tedster 2012/05/08 02:52:54 (edited)

You're sooo right- well, at least for the most part. I don't get why black rappers disrespect their sisters either (me being a sista myself), but I bet if a white man did the same thing they'd be ready to jump him. I agree, they should stop using the n-word, and stop referring to women as bitches and hoes. But here's where you're wrong- that kind of music (and I use the word "music" loosely) simply isn't real rap. That's plain garbage. Real rap music is inspirational, has meaning, and is used to fully express one's feelings. Not that I-wanna-f***-you crap you hear on the radio these days. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's fun to listen to (mostly for the beat though), but I'd never dub it as true music, it's just mainstream trash. Most real rap if found in the underground world, by unknown artists. But I have to thank you for having a good reason not to
like rap; it's just you may be a little biased.

Excellent pts all. I believe part of rap or hip hop's appeal besides it has great rhythm is that the young guys like it because it's rebelious and the angriest music around. For some reason part of being a young guy is to be a bit angry. Similarly, I'll always struggle when songs denigrate those "sistas" many of whom I find strong minded and exotic. I actually do like some hip-hop but I'll dislike songs that diss people since I find hearing the n word offensive even if it's black rappers doing it.

That notwithstanding, my generation grew up with a much more melodic style of music and many of us prefer "Classic" rock and roll perhaps because we know and can understand the words et al.
