Is the music played today, better than the music from 70's and 80's?

there was no (Undecided) to answer to so I'll just say say that I grew up in the 70's disco era and I ended up listening to 'Punk Rock" New Wave, and liked it, then came the 80's along with hip-hop and break dancing which I got involved in and mastered it very well then all the hype died out for while, and so then later I got into listening to Alternative Rock and like it ever since but Oldies are always good to listen to if you grew up with them and learned to apreciate the sounds and or lyrics....right?=P

There are some very good artists with some very good music...but as a whole, the music today is a far cry from yesterday...

Todays music is synthesized, electronically balanced, mixed and recreated to such a degree that it is not even comparable to the better ACTUAL music of the 70's and early 80's. Singers and songwriters in the 70's and 80's did relevant, interesting and fun music. Today it is all based strictly on commercial appeal. Besides, todays music all sounds exactly the same inside of each genre.

    Is this a joke?
NOT 80's THOUGH (I didn't see that). I really despite most "80's" unless it's specifically classic rock (early 80's) or grunge (late 80's). But hair bands and that pop music... ugh.

Yeah, just about everyone I know loves it. I think I'm in the minority. It's just too.. synthesized.. for me.
I don't hate it ALL mind, I do like some Madonna, and that song "dancing with myself" though I don't know why.

I don't like Madonna though although I like some of her songs. How come it is too synthesized for you?

Because I don't like the sound? I am just not a big fan of synth.
I don't mind it, with the right sound (for me), some of my favorite bands have used synthesizers, it's the "synthpop" style I don't really like.

Tracy Chapman did some really good, and valid 80's music, and Yaz, and a few others, DuranDuran was a studio creation to me, loved them, but formulaic at best.

Madonna was a true 80's artist-creative, fun and message oriented at times.

Tracy Chapman was an extraordinary talent. I saw her playing before Neil Young in the 80's. Heard of her because of one hit playing on the radio at the time, but not an artist I had paid much attention. She opened her act singing a song a-cappella, absolutely perfect. I'm sure she had plenty of fans, and it was her talent and song writing that made her. Wish she would have stayed on the scene more. Sad but true, she wasn't a particularly attractive lady, otherwise I think she would have been a much bigger hit with even larger fan base. Just sayn, particularly women artists, we are a sexist society.

She has a website, tours and is still recording. I miss the days when artists created music with a point, a story, a lyric, a reason. Not just noise and drugs/alcohol/random sex/etc.

All taste, I personally love the Hair Metal, disliked the Disco stuff from the 70's, although liked pretty much other stuff like Styx, Supertramp, Bob Seger, Allman Bros. My favorites were the ones that had been around in the 60's though, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Stones, Clapton, Nugent. Those guys were the hard core carrer artists. What ever happened to Styx or Supertramp, their music was great, but.............

Elton John, had to throw him on my list of the great ones. Little more pop than I usally listen, but your talking about an entertainer touring for over 40 years, he just played to a full house here just a few weeks ago.

There is more rhythm, I can understand the lyrics, there is no foul language used and it is not so blasted loud my eardrums collapse. It also is memorable. People are still listening and enjoying.

My mom used to say the same thing about the music I listened to in the 70's compared to the music her generation listened. Nat King Cole. Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby. Believe it or not, singers like that had a most definite influence on our music today.

Would've put the nineties in there with it too,but yes. In that day, most recordings where still analog, and there was no autotune and all that other garbage to fix poor musical skills. Also, most pop falls to the wayside, except for the classic pop like stuff from the Madonna and Prince and Jackson, all that stuff will be eternally popular, but even Brittany and Christina's stuff from the ninties generally isn't played anymore. Proof that when you put more into your music, it will stand the test of time.

I can't tell you how often I, or a family member or friend, many younger than me, will hear a tune on the radio or elsewhere and say something like "they just don't make good music like that any more". It's sad how much the music business has declined.

I love the 1970's music but I think the 80's were the worst decade for music. There are more different types of music today than there has ever been before, there is something for everyone. Some people assume todays music is all about MTV but they need to look harder.
