no, you have to go to church if you want to be a christian
    Bibliophilic
It's possible to espouse most ideological beliefs without convening in mass.

(A glitch caused me to select the wrong answer).

From what I can see, you just have to say you are one to be one...

Don't even have to believe and surely don't have to act like one...

Don't need to go to church, don't need to be good and kind to everybody, don't need to refrain from lying, stealing, killing (wars), and such...

If what I just said was not true, with almost 80% of americans saying they are christian, our prisons would be near empty, our crime rate would be to the floor, we would love & give to each other, we would not insult each other for having different political views, we would most certainly not be at war with at least one country (whichever) every year, non-stop since WW2...

    Just sayin'...

The Bible says "Let us not cease meeting together. And Jesus calls for communal worship. He tells us to teach one another, care for one another, etc. How does one obey those commands in isolation?

If you are reading this with serious doubts about the importance of church attendance, I hope you too will look deeper into the question of what the Bible says about going to church.

    Current Status

What does the bible say about church attendance?

The Bible tells us to meet together as believers and to encourage one another.

    Hebrews 10:25
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NIV)
The reason I encourage Christians to find a good church is because the Bible instructs us to be in relationship with other believers. If we are part of Christ's body, we will recognize our need to fit into the body of believers. The church is the place where we come together to encourage one another as members of Christ's body. Together we fulfill an important purpose on the Earth.

As members of the body of Christ, we belong to each other.

    Romans 12:5
... so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (NIV)
It is actually for our own good that God want us in fellowship with other believers. We need each other to grow up in the faith, to learn to serve, to love one another, and to practice forgiveness. Though we are individuals, we still be...

    Background

When you give up on attending church, what's at stake? Well, to put it in a nutshell: the unity of the body, your own spiritual growth, protection and blessing are all at risk when you're disconnected from the body of Christ.

Christ's body is made of many parts, yet it is still one unified entity.

    1 Corinthians 12:12
The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. (NIV)
    1 Corinthians 12:14-23
Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. (NIV)

    1 Corinthians 12:27
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (NIV)

Unity in the body of Christ does not mean total conformity and uniformity. Although maintaining unity in the body is very important, it is also vital to value the unique qualities that make each of us an individual "part" of the body. Both aspects, unity and individuality, deserve emphasis and appreciation. This makes for a healthy church body, when we remember that Christ is our common denominator. He makes us one.

Yes, of course, but I don't believe you are getting the full benefit of Christianity without the fellowship of other Christians during worship. But, hey that is just my opinion and remember with my opinion and 75 cents you can get a good cup of coffee.

The Christian life was never meant to be lived solo, God has gifted each member of his church to serve one another, you can’t do that solo. It is near impossible to live a Christian life alone, it runs counter to everything God has done for us. However, some people can’t help but live alone. The thief on the cross could not join a church, he had no choice; but where we have a choice, we really should become a part of God’s church.

It’s like someone who gets married, but never moves in with their husband. It is true that you can be married without living together, and there may be extreme circumstances that you can think of where someone may get married and not live together . But a real marriage involves relationship. Becoming a Christian means being a part of God’s family.

Yes. A church is a gathering vs the church as a building. Surely a just God understands financial situations and allows people to substitute their time in. Going to church really depends on who's there. Obviously, if God's not there, it's pointless. Sometimes pastors and board members get obsessed with attendance and raising funds instead of telling people about God.

The man who does not go to church but worships God with all of his heart and soul has a higher place than the man who attends church every Sunday, and gives 15% of his income to the crusade - as he sleeps with his neighbor's wife.

The church is a place to practice your faith but does not have to be a requirement to be one. Your faith and beliefs are what is grounded in you not in the church. If anyone says you have to go church to be they are flat out wrong.

According to the teachings of Jesus, what you do in life on a daily basis is what determines whether or not you are Christ like, and that defines what Christianity is. Do as Jesus did or would do, not worship any Man and Jesus was a man. Jesus showed the way or path to becomming one with the most high GOD!

Sure! Unless you can tell me the name and the denomination of the church Christ attended. Christ was Jewish, but was not a big favorite of the Jews during his time. So going to a synagogue might not be that appropriate either. We don't know all the exact conflicts he had with Jewish teaching at that time.
