Morality is in the eye of the beholder, anyways.. There is no true definition to right and wrong, because everyone has a different view.

Why not? A lot of people I know that are not religious, live more moral lives than some Christians I know. It's all about living a life of kindness and love and doing what is right.

Everyone has a fundamental understanding of what is right and what is wrong. So, yes, I think man could live morally without religion. Now do I think we should get rid of religion....nope, there are too many people in this world that need something to believe in and it helps them to live their lives.

I've met more moral atheists and agnostics then I have moral religious folk. Not say I've ever met amoral atheists or moral religious people though. Every group has its good and bad.

    Yes, but not very likely.

But we still need Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and to repent of our sins.

I actually find it FAR easier to be moral, since I stopped believing in God. I am no longer doing what I think is right, because I'm afraid of some celestial father-figure, spanking me. I also don't do them out of a selfish desire to be rewarded with an eternity of telling God how awesome he is.
I do what I think is right because I think it's right, because it makes the world a better place. I feel good about it, because I know I did it for the right reasons, and not because I felt that I had to.

I call it ethical rather than moral but it is certainly possible.

...I don't think a moral life is possible WITH the injection of religion into it...religions are based on control, bigotry and hate, none of which I find particularly moral...

The bible is full of great examples of good men and women that lived good moral lives and are a testament to us today. People today want to excuse themselves for not living a good clean life or they want to justify the way they live by trying to degrade those who live a good clean moral life.

Thanks for that. That was a good open-minded thing to say. I don't meet many believers who will concede that one can live a decent moral life without religion. Kudos.

I am a very strong believer & all my best friends have been from atheists . Strange . Now when I think . They always respected me . I don't remember one single time with a smallest discussion . We made jokes to each other's way of beliefs but we never hurt each other .

Because what is one man's morals is another man's evil, and vice versa.

There is no way to state an absolute morality unless you use some sort of supernatural-based belief system that claims it is above and beyond mankind.

Morality is not supernatural it is a function of the brain and is necessary for all social creatures. The fact that is can be changed easily is proof that it is not given to us form anything other than our own inner being.

    So, what's "moral" and "right"?

Today it can be one thing, and tomorrow another altogether.

Very true and it has changed over the history of time. It is not a true concept at all.

So, according to this, there is no "absolute" morality?
  • Muskoka Playerazzi 2012/06/12 01:02:49

    No there is not.

    Got it.

That means, for example, that it was OK that alcohol was illegal during Prohibition? That is, it would be moral, as that was the morality at the time?
  • Muskoka Playerazzi 2012/06/17 12:24:12
    Muskoka
According to the people who believed so at the time it was.
  • Playerazzi Muskoka 2012/06/17 12:30:51
    Playerazzi
So, what is moral or immoral for us today, may not have been years ago, and may again change in years hence?
