Is it better to keep bananas on the counter or in the fridge? Why?

It might be a mixture of the cold and dark that kills the banana. In my experience, they seem to rot faster if they're in a dark area like a cabinet or refrigerator.

They go bad very quickly when they are cold. That's good if you have a craving for banana bread, though!

If you put them in the refrigerator the peeling will turn black quite fast but the fruit will actually ripen at a slower pace (takes longer to get soft/sweet). I prefer mine when they're not ripe and when they're cold; so, I buy them while they are green, leave them in a fruit bowl on the counter until the night before I plan on eating it, then put it in the fridge and enjoy a cold, unripened banana (without a disgusting skin). :p

I keep them in the fridge because it's still too hot for them to be out of it.

It doesn't turn black unless you freeze them to put chocolate on them

Technically, it's BETTER to leave them out of the fridge because it's too cold for them. But for me personally, I only like the banana on the first or second day after it's bought, when it's still fairly green. And I hate fruits at room temperature. So my famliy always takes like, 2 bananas off the bunch and puts those in the fridge for me and leaves the rest out for themselves. I won't eat them once they're yellow anyway :/

They turn brown much faster in the fridge. Faster meaning over night.

Bananas ripen nicely on the counter but change detrimentally in the fridge. Freezing them and putting them in smoothies, however, is awesome!

Something weird happens to them in the fridge, maybe because they're tropical? I don't know what it is, but they're never as good seems to me. And they have no flavor when they're cold so you have to let them warm up -- kind of a waste of effort. :)

They turn brown on the outside and the actual fruit doesn't ripen.

They will turn brown and not be nearly as sweet if you put them in the fridge.
