Depends on the context. When using it as a specific place or fact like, "Hell is the opposite of heaven", its not a swear word but using it as an insult like, "burn in Hell", or are a curse like, "what the hell?!" then its a swear word
    gates of hell

Hell everyone knows. Everyone experiencing hell. What we know, and will continue to know, as you have experienced something that you do not want to repeat.
Worst hell still languishing so long since the war, as in Western Asia, Syria, etc. Terror

It is an unincorporated community in Putnam Township of Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan. (Hiland Lake)

Also Hell's Kitchen is an American reality television cooking competition (based on a series of the same name, broadcast in the UK) broadcast on Fox.

Sometimes, like if you are telling someone they will be cursed by God and go there.

But otherwise, it is a place name and is legitimate for discussion.

A word is a tool (like a gun), it's up to to the intention of the speaker & the sensitivity of the listener (or scribe/reader if written etc.) or vice versa.

It depends on the way you are using it. Speaking of hell as the realm or place, in context, is not considered an expletive in the general public. However, to set examples; " what the ----" or "go to ----" would be considered cursing or swearing, using expletives. It's kind of like the term "bastard" or "Bitch". It has an actual meaning that is generally acceptable, but due to its second, more popular use as an expletive, can be considered cursing/swearing.

  • wow-really 2012/10/17 16:38:23
Hell is a state of mind and a state of being..( I can think of a lot of worse foul language...)
Hell on earth, for example, is a term used to describe a state of being for say, people who are drug addicts, who would kill their own mother or children to get their next fix...
A tortured soul who has reached rock bottom with no way out. A place of misery they have created on their own.
Religions use it as a word to describe what life can be like for people who choose to live this life in very bad ways. A place where the devil lives, and where you can end up if you are evil, and do evil things.
    It's a word used to describe a non-option like:

Oh Hell No gif s Oh Hell No gif s

I don't acknowledge the make-believe standards that determine which words are "good" and which words are "bad." Riddle me this? Why is it okay for me to say "poop" (a word said by giddy 12 year old children) but not "s**t?" They mean the same exact thing.
