Is being judgemental a sign of intelligence or ignorance?

What do you think? Is it intelligent to judge people or matters that you know very little about, and therefore do not have enough information to make an informed opinion? Is it intelligent to over generalise and stereotype people and things? Is it intelligent to be absolutely obstinate in one's view, and not ever broaden one's mind to the possibility of other realities? Do people grow and learn by staying exactly the same in the exact same place and only ever thinking the same thoughts their entire lives? I think you know what I think... But what is your opinion?

I believe that some people find it easier to look at the faults of others rather than engage in self examination...

Walk a mile in you're brothers moccasins before you judge him,
so that when you do judge your brother you are a mile way and wearing his shoes... hahahahaha LOL.
Seriously whatever goes around comes around, when it does if you yourself aren't perfect... oops.

I don't think intelligence or ignorance have much to do with it most of the time. Being judgmental is human nature.

Well, I would have to disagree there. I think yes, the need to form some sort of judgement or opinion on things is human nature, just like the need for our brains to label and categorise things, but there is a difference between judging things when necessary and being judgemental (which is excessive).

Judgmentalism isn't a function of 'intelligence.' It's more of an emotional manifestation. Judgmentalism fills a psychological need in the judge.

The more you know, the more your realise how little you know. The truely ignorant are happy the way they are. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, it makes you think you know it all. Those are the people who are judgemental.

How can you judge someone for things that you not even know... many people just are judgemental period, but never will be able to love them because of that mind set. I am replaing empty minds with open ones, are you in?

Well don't we all think we know the facts? So what then? People must go through life making the best judgements they can based on the knowledge and experience they have. I think it is quite ridiculous to expect otherwise, its a free country and people have a right and a duty to speak their minds about what they believe is best for their country. The truth or facts can only be tested by continuously challenging them with what we think and believe.

Everyone is ignorant about many things, but is still a fact of life, and its no sin. Smart people educate themselves before "jumping to conclusions". If I'm reading your statement right, its not the judging, but the condemning people object to, isn't it. Well that is life too, its not a crime, just a shame.

I personally believe it is both a sign of ignorance and intelligence. Both the educated and uneducated can be judgmental, it depends on who you are as a person. I can be judgmental but the moment I start judging someone, my thought process changes to that of being understanding. Everyone is different and we must not come quick to assume things. For example, Michael Jackson loved children and slept on the same bed with them, and people have concluded that he is a pedophile, yet what these judgmental people don't take into account is the sort of person Michael was. He's a compassionate being who loves children because they resemble purity and innocence, something he holds dearly in his heart. Both the educated and uneducated can hold the same judgment in this case, it all depends on who you are.

Judgemental people tend to be narrowminded, from my experience. You rarely ever have all the facts, so judgements can be in error. I try very hard not to judge people, as I don't wish to be judged by them. Growth is only accomplished through the gathering of information/knowledge and an open mind.

Being able to judge what is potentially harmful, potentially satisfying, and what will potentially bring 'success' is a sign of intelligence. Creatures cannot survive without some degree of judgement.

I agree. Being judgmental and using judgment are two different things. You can use judgment to assess a situation or to try to determine if a person is safe or not. You can judge without being judgmental. But being judgmental pretty much means you are looking at a person and judging them based on looks, race, religion, lifestyle choices etc. and placing a moral denouncement on them.
