Internet Argument Techniques

Foxy Warrior Guru 2012/04/03 20:22:00
I ran across this little gem on cracked.com and it seemed to apply to an awful lot of people here on SH (especially conservatives), so I thought I would pass it along.

Internet Argument Techniques

Some people are so dumb that they think they can walk around
naked and argue people into believing they have clothes on. These people have
made their way to the internet.

How to Combat These Techniques

The important thing to remember is that you are dealing with a person who has
essentially placed a twig on their head and expects you to believe they are a
tree. Armored in that level of "confidence," almost anything you say will be
construed by them as evidence that their tree disguise is working, so you will
have to be very specific and to the point in addressing exactly what they're
doing and why it's not fooling anyone.

Subtlety and sarcasm are great tools but there is no way in hell they will
get through to this poor sap. Unless you're just toying with them for your
amusement, the best way to put an end to it is just to be direct. Point them to
this guide if necessary, explain that you know what they are doing, and that it
is so obvious it can be seen from space.

Chances are they will just end up placing more twigs on their head, praying
fervently that this will succeed, but at least you gave it your best
shot.

My favorite argument or comment reads are the ones that have tons of grammar and spelling errors in 'em. Especially when people start telling each other about their 'intellegence', or their lack thereof. Or when they claim to be an 'intellactual' or 'intellegent'. It always cracks me up and makes me shake my head while laughing. We Aint Never Made No Grammer Arrors zazzle_shirt

They usually hit me with the "Opinion Trumps Facts" technique:

Me: Reagan never did balance the budget during his terms.
Loony: REAGAN WAS THE GRATEST PRESIDENT EVER AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY SUCH HORIBLE THINGS SO DONT BE A LIBERAL CRYBABY BECAUSE I BLOCKED YOU NOW BECAUSE I WILL NOT TOLERATE YOU DIRTYING THE GOOD NAME OF SUCH A WONDERFULL MAN!

It happens on both sides. Liberals make fun of Conservatives. Conservatives make fun of Liberals. It's so childish.

Yes, they make fun of each other, but my experience and observation has shown that conservatives are much more likely to block people, post false or misleading information, and disregard facts that don't match their opinions.
That's why I sometimes pick on them. :)

    Very good post:)

Because I lose arguments so often, I have employed a few of these in the past.

Twice I used the Grammer one. The first time I used it I was noob and swore I would never use it again. The second time is when I saw someone attacking another for their grammar, but their grammar was wrong too. So, I just told them to get their own act together.

I think I've left all my Argument techniques behind with my old account. Now it's just straight-up back-n-forth: Win-Lose-or-Draw. I only met one person who said they were wrong. Everybody else changes the subject when they lose.

If I get bitch-slapped badly in an argument, I may change the subject dramatically. Like, if we are arguing politics and I said my candidate didn't say something and I am provided with a video of my candidate saying that... I may just respond: How bout those Yankees?

The Grammar Nazi's are the most obvious. True I might not always know where the appropriate place to use a comma is, or Which time to use Than or then. But it's ridiculous to pretend you didn't understand what I was getting at.

similar to First Amendment Reinterpretation mentality is confusing tolerance with acceptance, tolerance means you have rights to be a conservative,christian,atheis... etc,but you don't have to right to be unchalenged or uncriticised

I've seen this one so much it's mind-boggling! But I've seen it just as much by both extremes of the spectrum. I like to call it the "Dixie Chicks Delusion" because of how their careers tanked when they criticized President Bush during one of their concerts and everybody didn't automatically agree with them!

I also don't see another one used against me just a couple of days ago, when I was trying to make a point to someone else, he just lashed back at me with his opinion TYPED IN ALL CAPS!! and then blocked me so I couldn't respond any more. That one had to do with the Trayvon Affair.

I"ve been victim to many of those, particularly the "First Amendment Reinterpretation" where some people thought that they had a right to frequent a message board I paid for and then trash it with material that was clearly outside the TOS of the site. Just because I paid for it doesn't mean I could suspend the site rules.
