I don't think I would, maybe someone to come in and clean but no maids and butlers.

If I had the money, I would definitely employ someone to cook and clean. . .

I am not rich and I have servants - well they are called employees - and if I were rich I would employ even more people - so servants is not the right word

It would make me feel uncomfortable to have someone going around my house while I was off doing whatever I am doing, plus I don't trust many people what if the person cleaning my house picks up one or two of my things if you know what I mean.

I wouldn't call them servants in the traditional sense. They wouldn't live in or anything like that.

You are looking at the word 'servant' as derogatory....the real meaning is ...
serv·ant/ˈsərvənt/Noun: 1.A person who performs duties for others, esp. a person employed in a house on domestic duties or as a personal attendant.
2.A person employed in the service of a government.

When you say "traditional', you mean improper and negative. The word is not slave. The word is used for one who provides a service. I see that as positive.

I was thinking of the stereotypial sense with the butler named Jeeves and the driver named James sort of thing. So in your of the word servants, I guess I would.

I can hire a cleaner from a cleaning service, that does not mean they are my servant. The woman in the apartment three doors away works for a home cleaning service, she cleans many different peoples homes, as well as her own, is she a servant?.

It just means I'm hiring someone to do a job, not someone to run around at my beck and call. There is a difference.

whether you are paying them with room and board or with a lot of money, according to the definition, a servant is still a servant. they are serving you in some capacity.

serv·ant/ˈsərvənt/Noun: 1.A person who performs duties for others, esp. a person employed in a house on domestic duties or as a personal attendant.
2.A person employed in the service of a government.

I'll have to tell my neighbour and her husband that somebody thinks she's a servant, even though they run their own small cleaning business, for which she even does some work for. Here is her phone number 011 44 131 476 3276. Please give them a call, I would love to know what she said to you :)

I don't see why it makes a difference if she owns the company or not, if she gives services she is a servant and I don't see it as a bad word. I think politically correct has gone way overboard.

It's a job she does, it's mostly her and 4 others that do all the work, mostly her family. My definition of a servant differs greatly from schjaz. She makes a good living at what she does. more power to her. I'm not denigrating the occupation of servant, it is certainly not a bad word, it's a honourable way to make living.
  • schjaz Jeff Vader 2012/06/14 17:29:53
