50. Is it pagan laws that they wish to be judged by? Who is a better judge than Allah for a nation whose belief is firm?
51. Believers, take neither Jews nor Nazarenes for your guides. They are guides of
one another. Whosoever of you takes them for a guide shall become one of their number. Allah does not guide the wrongdoers.

The whole sura deals with relationships between various people and in the case of these verses those who were guided compared with the Muslims. These verses are simply saying, " this community is a new community, it is different from these others, do not mix the beliefs..." Just like the OT tells the Jews not to mix with the Canaanites or how the Christians separated from the Jews in the 2ndC CE.
As for Muslim friends, I have friends in the muslim, baha'i & ahmaddiyah communities.
