Yes It makes a sound, we might not hear it but the critters in the woods do. Just because we cant hear it dosent mean it didnt happen. We didnt see Jesus rise after the 3 days does it mean it didnt happen? Millions of people would disagree, they know it happen!

Sound is a vibration. It, like are other senses, is an electric current in our mind. Keeping that in mind, I would have to say no. (And by no one around I'm including animals)

Until someone observes it, it is both making a sound and not making a sound.

Ooooh, the existentialism of quantum mechanics! (Thanks a lot, Dr. Shroedinger!)

Well, considering that the dictionary defines "sound" as both the impulses sent to the brain through the auditory organ ("ear" for you fifth graders out there) AND the vibrations that impact upon that organ, I'd say yes, it does make a sound.

sound is vibration. If there is nothing there to pick up and translate the vibrations into sound, it does not exist.

cistianoronaldo7 How I love these types of questions after I come home from work in the wee hours of the morning :) The answer is yes. Sound is a wave that is generated from some type of mechanical/oscillating pressure and these waves propagate at different frequencies. 'Sound' waves at different frequencies are generated by the falling tree whether they're perceived or not. Regardless the waves are still there. Yes, 'sound' is there but the perception of the sound itself might not be.

Yes it does... sound is the vibration of air molecules in response to some physical external stimulus. The ear translates the vibrations into information, but the sound is there whether or not anyone was there to interpret it. If the forest was located in a vacuum, the response would be no.
That's my story anyway, and I'm sticking to it!

No. Sound is defined as something that a human hears, so if nobodys around to hear it, the tree falling in the woods doesnt make sound

"Sound is defined as something that a human hears"
    No it's not...

Sound is the vibration through air, which, humans AND animals can and eventually hear. Seeing how forests are packed full of animals then, well, I think you get it,

If you are moving at the speed of sound and you pass through the area of the falling tree and you are going so fast that you can outrun the sound that it supposedly makes; no matter what; then the tree will eventually hear you, but you will never hear the tree. Thus, the answer is no. Because remember, you were there when it made a sound, but you didn't hear it. So, how would you be able to hear it if you were there, and NOT moving the speed of sound? Therefore, the answer is NO it does NOT make a sound. .

It's still generating sound waves. So, yes, it makes a "sound" -- even if no living creature with ears is around to process it as such.
