If a doctor suddenly had a heart attack while doing surgery, would the other doctors work on the doctor or the patient?

He would be removed from the room, CPR given and code blue called, they would send for another surgeon to finish the surgery unless one qualified is already in the OR.

At no time would the patient be neglected or ignored.

Isn't there a back-up team hanging around to cover all surgeries in case a surgeon slices off his finger or something?

They'd call the Emergency room, and someone would perform CPR until someone else arrived. There are usually two doctors in a surgery just in case something like this occurs

I have had two cervical neck surgeries and just before my first surgery the neurologist called and said we were going to postpone my surgery. He was performing a surgery when his hip just fractured. (He is about my age and this was about 10 years ago or so.)
The fracture was not completely unexpected by him as he had already had to have his other hip replaced but the OR staff were pretty disturbed when they heard the crack and dropped to the floor in the OR. He was taken to the ER and treated and admitted to the hospital for surgery, himself.

He was back during surgery about 8 wks later. Pretty amazing.

Excellent question, I think some people in the operating room would do a quick change of gloves and go to work on the doctor the rest would continue to work on the patient on the table.

they would get the doctor out of there and continue working on the patient, then get more doctors to help the doctor who had the heart attack. They might also need a replacement for the doctor who had the heart attack.
