I can't help you, but I wanna do that so badly too!
japanese is just so awesome .
but I know some words :

bachaan - granny
gomen nasai - i'm sorry
nani / nande / nandato - what
orewa - i (me)
omaiyo - you

I don't know if they're right, but I'm pretty sure about the first three
ones . hopefully we all get to learn this amazing language .

2 alphabets and to be able to read the newspaper you would have had to have memorized about 2500 kanji

Sorry can't help you. They have an entirely different language with many symbols. I would love to know Chinese only because it is spoken by so many people.
