If the * is multiplication, you do that first by 'Order of Operation' (exponents, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction)
So multiply 5 times 0 gives you zero.
That leaves you with
5+5+5-5+5
15-5+5
10+5
15

I was taught old school math. Have no idea what * means. I do know 8 x 5 is 40, but like I said, old school.

I don't remember what the "associated rule" is, but I think you might be right instead, and this is what I thought too. I thought that you would normally go left to right unless exponents and parentheses were involved. Is this the associated rule? I Can't remember, it's been too long.
