How far back can you trace your ancestry?

Cal Woodrow 2012/07/12 03:05:00
I've been doing quite a lot of genealogical research lately. I happen to be biracial (White/Black), so my father's (black) heritage is hard to trace but I am making significant progress! My mom's father's ancestors are easily traced back to Wales, and my mom's mother's back to France. Both are traceable to around the early 1600s. How far back can you trace your ancestors? -- And to where? -- Any notable distant family members?
You!

My dad did a family lineage and traced records back to 15th century Spain and found we are decedents of the Moors who built most of Iberia.

"Without meaning to be disrespectful or insincere; I assure you I am not."
My limited research of my ancestors indicates that they are all dead, a fact I find less than reassuring.

My family's ancestry has been traced back to the reign of Charles the Great (Charlemange), the first Holy Roman Emperor in the 9th century. Yes, the 9h century - some 1200 years ago. European ancestries are much easier to trace if you're descending from nobility and/or royality. However interesting that may be, it does not make one superior to other people. Charlemange

Hi fellow Welshman (on my mother's side). I bogged down once I reached the 16th century. Europe just had too many wars and too many parish record have been destroyed. Now, I am resigned to filling out the branches.

My mom's father's side we traced all the back to my 11th great-grandfather. It was his son, my 10th great-grandfather who was the immigrant ancestor from England in 1634. We haven't done much on my mom's mother's side. On my father's side, only back to the immigrant ancestors in the 1840's from Wales & Germany.

I have almost all my lines back to the 1600's some earlier and a few later. I was really obsessed for a long time and I've done so many other families from friends. I've traced a black friend's family and it was most interesting. What I had to do with his was to trace the white family that owned his ancestors along with his family. It's pretty subjective but interesting. My granddaughter is bi-racial but her father is from the Bahamas and it's just about impossible to trace his family. So many of them weren't married and they don't know much about their families. My husband's family goes back to Wales...Castle Walwyn.

Oh, the second part. My husband is related to Henry Hudson the Explorer on both his mother's and his father's side which is really strange because they come from very different parts of the country. I'm related to some very early settlers and the only interesting story is one of my ancestors was commissioned to build a log wall across Manhattan to keep the Indians out when it was Dutch. That's where Wall Street is today.

Good luck! Genealogical research is time consuming but it is also very rewarding.
