How do so many people confuse Australian accents with British accents?

And vise versa. I think they sound completely different, yet so many people get them confused.

    At first, they sound the same, but after a while, you can pick up the nuances.

    I have clue. I can tell the difference very easily, maybe they have a hearing issue.

    I used to think they sounded the same but when you hear them very closely there are differnces to the accent.

    I think there are a lot of British people will have some difficulty distinguishing an American accent from a Canadian.

    Even within Great Britain itself there are a huge number of different accents from Cockney (London) to Highland Scotland. These two are so different that one will hardly be able to comprehend the other. There was a documentary programme on our National TV about the lives of Aberdeen fishermen and the producers (in their wisdom) saw fit to include subtitles - even though they were speaking English! :-)

    I think people who can't tell the difference simply haven't heard them enough or had them explained to them when they did hear them. Like when people have trouble telling between different Asian cultures, because they haven't been told which is which.

    When the accents are subtle, I think I find it difficult to tell, also.
