Anyway, yeah, in the book his leg gets mauled by mutated wolves and they have to amputate him. That, however, does not happen in the movie

There never is, but a good movie version of a book excites you as much as the book. It stimulates you to experience visually, what you've already experienced in your mind. I hope that reading the books will fill in what they can't show.
