Yes and no. I didn't move around much as a kid and grew up in the same place from 3.5 to 19 years of age. I did move around a lot during my first marriage. Since then, for the last almost twenty years, no.
When I moved in, it was rent stabilized. Then it went co-op, but I couldn't afford the maintenance AND a mortgage payment, so I stayed as a rent stabilized tenant when someone bought the shares in my apartment. When he realized he wasn't going to get me out, he stopped paying his mortgage, the bank foreclosed on him and I got the apartment for $17,000 less than it would have cost me had I bought it originally. It was one of those rare times when you're in the right place at the right time. I was very lucky.
It greatly facilitates moves (lol).
