Yes. I was channel surfing and heard a Cole Porter tune. Much to my chagrin, I was watching Lawrence Welk and enjoying it!

I may be 55 but I still left that one to my Grandmother.

But to make a secret confession I was known to watch Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians from the Waldorf Astoria on New Years Eve.

My Old Man drank whiskey with Lawrence Welk before he got famous. He watched his show every Saturday night. It was torture to me.

We got our first TV in 1956. Purchased it used for $350.00 because it kept burning vacuum tubes out.
My father sat behind it for several hours and finally found the problem.
A repairman had placed a pencil mark near a tube and you could see the electric spark travel along it, burning the tube out. He erased the mark and we never had any more problems with it.
We watched Lawrence Welk, Gunsmoke, Have gun will travel, and Bonanza.
I even remember the live presentation of an unknown singer (Elvis Presley).
The one I could never miss was the Mouseketeers, I just had to watch Annette Funicello.

In 1950, a TV and good antenna would take about a years wages for most people. A neighbor had one and they could get 1 station sometimes. The station was St Louis channel 5 which was over 100 miles away.

When we had our antenna installed we had it aimed towards Portland and the channels available were CBS channel 6[KEX]
and even though the TV was only a VHS the other channel was 27 a UHF channel.
So we put a different piece (forgot what they were called) in the tuner, in the channel 7 position and we were able to watch a very snowy picture.

It was probably a strip. The tuner had 12 sides/strips, each side tuned in a different channel, 2 through 13, a strip could be removed and replaced with a different channel, in your case UHF channel 27.

Yeah, even if most of the hokey regular fare put you off there were surprises among the guests like that. Dick Dale was on a few times as well, I recall.
