I have used my sick time for other than sick days when it was allowed to do so. (Simply an accounting code in paid time off that was in effect vacation time.) However, I have never taken a "sick day" (called in sick) when I wasn't sick.
Doing that would be dishonest. That is not me.

When I've had something important (in my opinion) to do and didn't have the time to both it and work. I don't think I've had a boss that cared as long as I've gotten my stuff on time / got someone decent to fill in depending on which job it was.

Couple of times, especially on Maundy Thursday/Good Friday. I went to a catholic primary school so on those days the class would go to church. Since you don't exactly learn anything there anyway mum always gave us the choice to call in sick.
