walk in cinemas are edging out the drive in theaters. First, walk in cinemas
are cheaper. You can pack more admissions in a smaller piece of real
estate, and also have more screenings per operating day in most walk in
venues. Both of these make walk ins more ecconomical to operate.
Second, drive in theaters are rarely able to provide more than six screens,
while modern walk in cinemas can can offer almost thirty different screens
at a single location. And third, walk in cinemas are able to offer state of the
art sound to enhance your viewing experience, while the sound at drive ins
is able to be only as good as your vehicle's audio system, and the venues
own radio transmitting equipment.
People would bring their kids in their PJ's, and we'd all play on the playground equipment until the pre-movie ads and cartoons would start. Then all the kids would scatter like rabbits, racing back to their cars. Back then, some studios still had a cartoon before the feature would start, and the drive-in offered double-features, so it was a great bargain.
We still have a 4-screen Drive-in, in business in a neighboring town, maybe 15 minutes away. They hold swap meets there more than they do movies, it seems, but every once in awhile if I'm in that area, I'll still see double-features playing there. I haven't been to that drive-in in ages, though, which is a shame, it's the last one I know of still playing anywhere in our valley or the neighboring valleys.
