Have you ever been sprayed in the eyes with pepperspray or mace?

In the Academy, you will be instructed on the use of all lethal and less than lethal weapons that you will have access to as a Law Enforcement Officer.
That training includes being on the receiving end of the less than lethal weapons.
Even though my Department does not authorize the use of pepper spray, we had to indure the training anyway.
Unless you are highly allergic to capstan (or any of the other ingredients), the effects are short and temporary, and the sting only lasts for a short time. Of course for instruction purpose, the shot is short and from a distance that disperses most of the spray.
What you may wish to prepare yourself for is certifying on this:
It's a shocking experience ;')
The second that gas hits your face, your eyes and nose just gush and burn. Lungs and throat turn to fire. A few of the guys just lost it, but most of us were able to follow instructions with no problems. On the outside, they had us open our eyes as wide as possible and wave our arms in big overhead circles yelling "MY EYES ARE OPEN MY ARMS ARE FLAPPING!" a few times to clear our lungs of the stuff. After 10-15 minutes, everybody was pretty much normal again.
I imagine police training will use pepper spray rather than combat chemicals, so you probably won't have the breathing problems to deal with. Just do what they say, and you'll be fine. They train thousands of people without incident every year.
