Every dog or cat I have had I adopted , but not from the shelter. They were all adopted because someone couldn't care for them and/or , with most of them , they were cruelly released on our road and left to meet their fate by an oncoming vehicle.

Our last dog was a rescue. He died this past October, and we are planning to get another dog once we return from our summer vacation.

Many of my pets were found pets. So many deserving animals-not just dogs and cats, but horses, rabbits, parrots and even donkeys. In this economy many have abandoned pets. It's not the pets' fault. If you can, adopt. If you can't adopt, donate.

This bunny looks like our Thor, who died last Fall. He was released by someone in the park by our house. We had him for nearly ten years. I miss him. He was so funny.

Most of my animal buddies, have been rescues of some kind. I did buy a dog once, from a very nice couple who clearly treated the parents of the puppies very well; they had their own room in the house! That little silver schnauzer, was my best friend for 14yrs. I would not buy an animal again, unless adoption fees count as 'buying'.

Baby birds that have fallen from the nest and abandoned by the parents.

My most successful attempt was with a baby swallow (I think it was a "Welcome Swallow").

I found it in my backyard after a night long electrical storm with high winds.

I put it into a plastic fish tank with heat lamps monitored by me and my my mum and fed it earth worms minced with calcium granulate and water and it nearly survived passed it's initial feathering.

From the look I saw in it's eyes and it's behaviour I don't think it much liked captivity and probably would have preferred it's own kind or at least somebody specialised at rearing wild infant birds.

We adopted a cat who had formerly been owned by a neglectful owner. Sadly he had to be put to sleep recently. We gave him a much longer and better life than he had there though.

We have a dog that was a "free" dog that was evidently abused. It took her a long time to calm down. Now she's around ten and I know we won't have many more years with her and that makes me sad. I wish we had had her as a puppy. She deserved so much better for her first year.

That's how our cat was. He had completely lost his voice before we even got him. He was afraid of everyone for the first few years, but he really warmed up towards the end. He was purring until the day he died. We actually just had to take another cat to the vet today. They are going to have to put him to sleep, too.

You will love this story. My daughter, then in college, was driving down the street by a vacant lot when this little bundle of black and white fur came bounding down. At first she thought it was a rabbit or a skunk, but on looking, it was a tiny kitten. She opened the door, hoping to move it back from the street and it jumped in. She took it to an emergency animal clinic and they said he was healthy, although covered with fleas. She's not a cat person, but she took the kitten home, bathed it twice to remove the fleas. He started purring, LOUDLY. She was enchanted. He never left. He's white with black ears and front paws and his sides look like someone took a paint roller of black paint. He's five years old now and despite the first vet's saying he would always be a runt, he's HUGE.

That makes me SO ANGRY. We live near a park so people frequently drop unwanted pets thinking they are sending them to paradise. The worst ones are those that release rabbits. Those bunnies can't survive in the wild, they don't know how to find food and they become coyote meals.

Yes many times. There's no other way for me.There is a problem I have though and it's not easy but it has to be done. I am happy to be adopting a pet ,but sad at the same time for all the others left behind looking at me asking to please take me home.I Usually wind up taking a few.I can't help it.If I see adoptions in the paper advertising a pet that needs a home I will do it that way to avoid picking only one.I want them all.

Had a baby. One of my cats isn't taking to kindly to the change so I think its only right to get rid of both of them... unfortunately, because of their age shelters say they don't want them. My only option is to put them to sleep but I really don't want to do that...

Dropping your elderly cats off at a shelter, would likely be a death sentence anyway. Cats don't generally take well to changes, at first. I'm sure you know that, if you've had them for 15yrs. You must not be very close to them, if you'd kill both of them, because of something one of them is doing?

Apparently you missed the part where I said I just had a baby. I love my cats but my child comes first. First, I would never take my cat to a kill shelter. Secondly, I can't have a cat who is upset and refuses to use the liter box while I have an infant in my home. Its not healthy... Don't assume you know how I feel about my cats. I love them but my child's health comes first... and I just said I DO NOT WANT TO PUT THEM ASLEEP.... pay attention. Thanks for your unsolicited opinion but it don't amount to much...
