After you go through that for a round or two.
Just go to your dad and say "Mom said yes".
When he says "Ok",then go tell your mom "Dad says yes" then she'll say "ok".

    Problem solved...

but a sibling was able to exploit that quite a bit, possibly leading to a divorce later.

My mom and dad got divorced when I was very young, so that never happened to me.

I ended up growing up with my mom, grandma, grandpa, aunt, and uncle all in the same house, so instead it usually happened like this..

    Me:"Mom, can I please....?"
    Mom: "Ask your grandma/grandpa/aunt/uncle......
    Me: "Grandma/grandpa/aunt/uncle, can I please...?
Grandma/Grandpa/Aunt/Uncle: "Go ask your mom first"

Hated this growing up, now I hate it when I give my kids an answer & if they don't like the answer they'll go ask the other parent. You'd think they'd begin to realize that doing this almost always guarantees a no the next time also :)

After being a single mom of 3 for 5 yrs I had to learn to be the tough parent, the kids outnumbered me, I would've been I'm trouble if they would've figured that out! My husband likes that discipline isn't all his responsibility :)

My kids got a taste of that! I did too when I was young. If both parents agree and back each other up, then it is OK to do that.
