I never used it personally but my grandmother when younger used to cook everything from scratch and we consumed it as a family. She used Crisco more than anything though. crisco

It was what we used when I grew up for cooking ..
(we would raise our own dairy cows and churned our own butter too) ..
needless to say .. there's many who have not heard of this ..
But for pie crusts .. I remember this was what made them truly flaky indeed.

It is used quite often for refried beans but I do not like the taste.....I use vegetable shortening instead or butter, the real spread.

Makes the absolute best pie crusts, tortillas and refried beans. That said, for the beans, there are healthier options for fats-but for pie crusts and tortillas, the non-lard options are just as bad, health wise, so unless I'm cooking for vegans or vegetarians, I go with the lard.

Yes I have. I know it's not good for you but it was sure tasty. The best french fries come from frying in lard.

A few years ago making refried beans the recipe called for it. Have to admit they tasted great but certainly not healthy.

That's how you make suet basically. You do it for some species of birds, mix the seeds and what not into the fat.

So you mix the bird seed with the lard and feed it to the birds? I wouldn't think birds would go for that. Learn something new everyday. Thank you.

I mix 1 cup of lard, one cup of peanut butter, 3 cups of cheap yellow cornmeal and 1 cup of Quaker quick oats.

Roll it up in wax paper log and cut off the roll as you need it. I freeze mine to last a little longer.

I never have. I am fairly sure very little was used by my Mother. We ate very little fried food virtually no gravy and she really did not bake. Stuff is not good for you!
