Has anyone ever approached you speaking a foreign language, that you don't speak?

I had that happen to me quite a few times. I just say, I'm sorry, I don't speak that language.

When I was a kid(16-17) my friends dad would try speaking Bosnian too me.

Oh wow! Did he think you were Bosnian? Or he just didn't know English?

No, he knew I spoke English and Hungarian(which despite being near Bosnia is nothing like it and he knew)

My brother also often says things to me in French, also my Sifu will tell me to do somehing in Mandarin or Cantonese(though after all these years, I've learned a little of both).

Oh wow! Seems like you have access to so many different languages. So you're father speaks Mandarin and Cantonese? WOW!! I am liking your environment! So, cool!

My father speaks Hungarian, Manderin, Cantonese, French, Norwegian, and Icelandic. My Sifu(kung fu teacher, but is like a second father) speaks and taught my father Manderin and Cantonese, and obviously also speaks English.

Then my brothers speak an assortment of languages, and many friends of mine, speak different languages. I can speak Norwegian, I just can't read or write it very well.

Oh!! Got you, Sifu as in master! coOL. How long have you been training? WOW!! You're father must be an intelligent man. Good deal!

Well, I've been practicing Kung Fu, for about, technically 20 years, and technically 13. When I was a kid, I didn't live with my father(not until 10) so he and my Sifu, who is his Sifu, would send me videos of Kung Fu. So I'd copy these videos and just do them over and over every day(My mother was poor and I had no toys, or anything like that). And then when I hit ten, my father brought me to our Sifu, for hands on training.

Sifu said I did some stuff decently, and others not so much. But I did gain strength for things like Sei Ping Ma(horse stance).

Oh, and I've trained in for those 20/13 years, Hung Ga, and Bak Mei.
Sifu later at around 15 started showing me some techniques from Lung Ying, that complimented Bak Mei, and had me do a very tiny bit of Wing Chun for speed.

As for my father, he and my uncles are all pretty smart. Pops has a passion for Norse culture(thus the Norwegian and Icelandic) and Kung Fu/Chinese culture. He is full blooded Magyar, and he took French in high school, and decided to fully learn it.

Sorry for the lengthy post. Hahaha.

In the army, yeah... worse yet, I got lost in a few foreign cities (Seoul, for one) and couldn't read their signs or find anyone who could speak English to tell me how to get where I needed to go. It's scary!

Oh my! What did you end up doing? How long did it take you to figure out how to get to where you needed to go? Yes, that would be too scary, because anything could happen.

In Seoul, I drove around for about 5 hours in a military ambulance until I was finally able to find the main highway going north. There's nothing like the sight of an American flag when you're in a situation like that! Iraq had much worse problems than that... never know who to trust, and there's no place 'friendly' to go. :O(

Yeah that would make the situation worse, not knowing who to trust. Good thing you were able to find your way and make it back safely. I imagine getting lost in Iraq being 100 worse than getting lost in South Korea. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation. Start praying that I would find my way, miraculously, maybe.

Which languages are you studying, if I may ask?
  • Mic-E sockpuppet 2012/08/03 06:19:51

Of course. No worries. I am refreshing my Spanish, which has gone from fluency to basic. I am also learning Korean, I can read Korean pretty well. I am also going over the Japanese writing systems. Do you speak any other languages?

You're taking on some tough languages-- and they could very well come in handy in a few years, too. I taught myself some very basic (spoken) Russian-- can decipher the written language, but it takes a lot of time to sound it all out and my vocabulary is quite limited. I just liked the sound of it, and hoped to read Russian Lit in their language some day. Not going to happen. :O)

Yeah that's what everybody is saying. I can pronounce those languages fairly well. So, I am hoping it will just click as I learn them more. We as for Russian, if you really want to be able to read Russian Lit then you should be able to do it if you don't give up. If you really want it, stick with it. You can do. The sky is the limit. :)
