If you actually read how Moses (the important guy who god spoke face to face with, and the guy who got the 10 commandments off of God) describes 'God' in the bible, it's basically the exact description of a volcano.
Exodus 13:21
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:
Exodus 14:24
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
Exodus 19:16
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
Exodus 19:18
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
Exodus 20:18
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
Exodus 24:18
And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights
Deut. 4:11
And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the middle of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
Deut. 5:4
The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.
Though volcanoes are not exactly rare in Mediterranean and middle east area...as you might know. We have the African plate colliding with the European plate, so yes there are many volcanoes around that area plus plenty of glaciological activity that often lead to massive landslides. These can easily cause tidal waves.
Exodus 15:19
For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought back the waters of the sea upon them
Tsunami anyone?
Well this was fun.

Good job Scott, you really have outdone yourself.
Edit: What I mean is that noticing the similarities between the God of the Bible and a volcano is, well.... something I never thought of! :) I'm not evaluating it from a Christian perspective, though.
But Ella (below) is right, people used to worship volcanos, the Greeks (or Romans) thought that Vulcan lived under a mountain, and when it erupted... Voila! Pompeii as it is now.
Edit: And yes, it is indeed a 'yay'
