Gandalf is much more durable than Dumbledore. Gandalf is much more powerful in the Books than he is in the movie. Dumbledore might be powerful and even smart but Gandalf is also smart, and powerful. In addition he can cut through swathes of orcs.

Gandalf fights and kills the Balrog. Comes back to Middle Earth saving Rohan from destruction during the Battle of Helm's Deep. Then he goes and defends Minas Tirith from certain destruction. I'll take Gandalf please.
